  • Vienna instruments window & ESB distortion in Logic Pro

Here's how I can reliably reproduce the bug:

    1. Set up 2 screen sets in Logic, one with an Arrange window open, one with an Environment window open and an instrument object, with the instrument object on a track in the arrange window so it can be played.

    2. Go to the instrument window and instantiate Vienna instrument.
The plug-in window appears with an "Show Window" button. All other plug-ins show the plugin interface where the button is. Anyway....

    3. Click the button to open the Interface window, and load a preset.
Sound is fine so far, but the Logic instrument window title bar becomes greyed out, play/stop key doesn't work, screenset keys don't work. No other au instruments have these problems.

    4. Without closing the interface window, click on the Logic environment window to bring it to the front. Play/stop and screenset keys now work. Switch to the Arrange window.

    5. Switch back to the Environment window. The interface window has vanished, but the plug-in window with the "Show Window" button is still there. Up to this point everything still plays fine.

    6. Click the button to open the Interface window. Now there is horrible distortion on the Vienna instrument, and all other instruments on the ESB busses.

    Workaround:

    De-instanciate Vienna instrument.
    Save song.
Quit Logic. Activity monitor shows vsldaemon (Not Responding), Synsopos, VSL-Server still running.
Log out Mac OSX user, log back in, open the Song.
Re-instantiate Vienna instrument and re-load preset.

Be careful to ALWAYS CLOSE THE Vienna Instrument interface window before switching to another screenset . N.B. closing the V.I. interface window does not bring the other windows to the front, so you still need to click on either the environment window or the plug-in window to get the keys working so you can switch screensets or use the Play/Stop key. I think the bug has something to do with re-opening the interface window which should already be visible but has vanished when switching screensets.

If Logic is playing when opening the V.I. interface window for the second time, usually the ESB distortion is triggered. But occasionally I get a Direct TDM error: System Overload (-10011) and then the sound plays fine.

    Logic Pro 7.2.1
    Mac OSX 10.4.6
    Vienna Instrument installer: OSX-1.06-ppc.pkg
    Dual 2.3 GHz G5

Is this the right place to post bug reports? I will cross-post to the Logic-TDM list.

  • I, too, am getting the horrible ESB distortion bug, using Logic 7.2.1 as the front end for a PT HD6 system (PT 7.1cs8, Mac OS 10.4.6).

I tried to install the Harp and Percussion VI on my Mac/Logic/PT system (the other VIs are installed on my external PC's) so I could spread things around among my various computers. I don't thing this is going to work, though. The ESB distortion thing happens very often, and I can't be restarting Logic all the time.

So, it looks like I'm going to have to move the Harp and Percussion libraries to my other computers.

Is anybody out there running Logic as a front end for PT and using ESB having good luck with the Vienna VI's?

  • Can anyone confirm that the distortion does not happen if you always close the Vienna Instrument interface window before switching to another screenset?

This should help the software author find the bug.

  • Same problem here. Just installed VI (Symphonic Cube) on a G5 2x2 /8GB with PT HD1/Logic 7.2/PT7.1c6 at one of my clients studios.

Logic ran fine. ESB distortion (almost) never occured again after installing 7.2 update. Starting Logic now and running it with EXS24 and other instruments: no problems. Instanciating VI on other Instrument track: no problem. BUT, opening the User Interface window of VI (clicking the button): ESB DISTORTION!

The only way to get rid of it is to reboot Logic, but after instanciating VI again: distortion!!!

This is so deeply frustating! My customer has just spend a lot of €s. And what does he get: distortion, while all other instruments have been running without it for quite some time now.

    Can anybody help us out?

    THANKS for reading.
