  • UNIVERSAL BINARY COMPATIBILITY

Anybody knows if the new Vienna Instruments are compatible with the new Macs (Universal Binary)?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

  • I think someone said that they are still working on the UB versions, but they should be done soon. Perhaps one of the VSL guys can comment.

  • Vielen Dank!

  • welcome emek,
for several reasons we decided to not provide universal binaries - there are different installers for OSX-ppc and OSX-intel.
the intel-version is already available from our software updates for users with registered vienna instruments, it is labeled *public beta* since we could not make too extensive tests here so far because of a lack of machines (we're waiting desperately on the desktop models)

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Can I install the ppc version of Vienna Instruments on the intel based mac and then upgrade to the beta version?

    Thanks

  • no need (and AFAIK not possible) to install the ppc version on an intelMAC ... just use the intel version from scratch. all functions are identical.
our inital test eg. on a probook gave us great results regarding performance

    cm--

sorry to bother you again with this question, but I would really like to know more about these "great results"on the Intel-Mac platform in more detail.

Do the specs differ at all from your previous tests with PPC 2.5 Dual?

Are there specific improvements such as instance counts, stability, loading times, or....?

  • please consider this post was from june ... new OS X version and new processors meanwhile as well as new VI and LCC versions - the *great results* have been faster startup- and loading times and more instances at that time. but the intel-macs beat the ppc's on almost any purpose (there are a few altivec-related and not yet rewritten functions in some programs left where a ppc still performs better)
