  • 2nd Violins

I'm considering purchasing some of the new VSL libraries, but I'm a bit confused in regards to strings. VSL offers no seperate "2nd violins" instrument, so how do you handle this situation? Simply use the 14 violins for both parts? If so, do you use 2 seperate instances of VI, or combine both parts into 1 instance?

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have used three different ways of doing it:

    1. Use the regular violins twice but panned differently, and one of them with EQ. If two notes overlap then I make sure its not the same patch playing.

    2. Use regular violins and chamber violins for 2nd violins.

    3. Appasionata violins (the freebie for upgraders) and regular violins.

  • Thanks, Christian. What sort of EQ'ing would you use on the 2nd violins, though? And how do you handle 2nd violins for a chamber string arrangement? Simply duplicate the violins patch and EQ it as well?

Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this. I'm actually curious about VSL's reasons *not* to include a seperate section of 2nd violins. Is there a specific reason for not doing so?

Basically they tested it and it made no difference to the sound having a couple of players less.

  • Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for letting me know.

  • The Appassionta collection will probably come out at some point and give users the second string section they desire. They Violins are 20 players with the regular at 14 so this should work great.
