  • Spreading VI collections over 3 G5s.

I intend on getting the full extended VI Library and would like to run it on 3 slave G5s (all with 259 gig sata 7200rpm secondary drives). Here is what I was thinking.

    G5 1 - Solo Strings, Chamber Strings, Orch Strings 1, Orch Strings 2 (186gigs)

    G5 2 - Percussion, Woodwinds 1, Woodwinds 2
    (206gigs)

    G5 3 - Harps, Brass 1, Brass 2
    (156gigs)

Does this seem logical? any suggestions? Would firewire 800 Drives be better?

    Thanks for any advice.

  • i'd vote for internal drives - cooling is generally better (and mandatory) than for FW-drives. make sure the harddisks are enabled for NCQ.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Not shure how to set my drives up for NCQ.

  • a drive (more precisely: its interface) has to support sATA, there is nothing you can setup - see for example http://www.seagate.com/products/interface/sata

    Hi there Livitican -

In answer to YOUR questions first - I would go internal DEFINATELY. The whole firewire 800 buss thing is great but if you really want to be sure and have a tidy solution - go Internal....thats what I have done - purrs like a kitten

As for the split of Library - It all depends what you do most of - the way you suggested it on your post looks OK.....I would be a llittle worried about ALL the strings being on one machine - eg if you wanted to say prog with your main orch stgs and then maybe mix in a little chamber for rosin say - you will be running a chunk of stuff on one machine. I would probably invest in one more drive and install the strings on machine 2 as well and move the syncrosoft keys around depending on the project. Some guys have reported problems with the VI's on G5's but mine have been sweet from the install date - not one problem.

    Ok....now my turn [:D]

Just wondering what you were going to use on the slave machines to host the VI's...(Bidule Plogue / Destroy FX AU host - also some apps like Digital Performer allow multi installs - unlike Logic 7 [8o|] ) and how you were going to link them together (into a mixing board or light pipe them into your main g5 DAW and have them show up in your DAW mixer on screen)?

I myself am also looking at the option of having slave G5's ( but also at the possibility of PC's - cheaper etc etc)

At the moment I run G5 2.5DualP/ OSX 10.4.6 / 6.5 GB RAM /Logic 7.2.1 & 2 internal 250 Gb sATA (Not RAID) and am looking at the option of having 2 - 3 additional slave G5's.....(but also at the possibility of Carillon PC's - cheaper etc etc., but the whole PC / RAM ceiling of 3GB has got me thinking)

With the G5's my latest idea is to have 2 AU hosts running at the same time in each of the G5's - thus, each host, running as an independent app has access to around 3.4Gb of Ram (the unofficial / official quoted ceiling in OSX is 4Gb per Application) - so obviously with 2 hosts on each G5 you will be able to access around 7Gb RAM approx - unlike the PC's at present (apparently due to the 32bit system) which is just over 2 if you have 3Gb installed - and that seems to be with a bit of under the bonnet tweeking.

I would probably then upgrade my Main G5 DAW soundcard from the RME (which I LOVE BTW) to the MOTU PCI buss system and run 2 or 3 lightpipes from each of the slaves into the MOTU 2408 / HD192 interafaces (giving a total of 96 audio chhannels so plenty of room for expansion!!) and buy a controller for access to faders etc etc

I know Svonkampen has a 2 x G5 setup and runs Bidule Plogue on the slave to host VI's - but I wonder if he has thought of having a second host running on the slave - and if it would even work....

Any way - you get the picture!!!

Let me know where your at.....

    best wishes

    PaulM

  • Actually - just realised I am being a twat. [8-)]

When you load a VI in either AU host - the VSL server is launched and it is THAT that accesses the RAM so if you had 2 AU hosts on a slave G5 it wouldn't matter - as I am sure only 1 VSL server can be active at 1 time......therefore only 4GB accessed...(or would it?!?! [6] )

I own the Pro Edition so I guess when the Giga GVI comes out in OSX format (release date - just after hell freezes over ) I could load my Pro Ed onto the G5 and access it thru the GVI - that doesnt need VSL server as it is not a VI.

    Sorry about the false alarm....

  • you name it ... NCQ depand not on a software ... i'm not even sure i understood the post ...

Sorry : because seems VI used in standalone is not multitimbral i want just know
the name of something similar VStack for Mac.
    Thanks

  • try "Bidule Plogue"

  • Many Thanks....hope in the next future a VI capable of...?

  • Im running hammerfalls on my slave G5s sending adat output to my protools HD system. Everything is word Clock synced to an Ardvark 2 word clock generator. I have been running DP 4.6 now 5 as my host app. on my slaves.

As for spreading out the library, Would it be smarter to put all of my strings except Chamber Strings on one G5, and then put chamber strings on one of the others?

  • You can always move the dongles around and stream the samples over the network. Your decision about what to put where isn't chiseled in stone, in other words.

NCQ: cm is just saying it's a hard drive feature.

  • Wouldn't streaming from a network cause problems with latency?

  • It shouldn't, and it definitely doesn't if you use a server.
