  • On the point of buying the standard library -advice please

I am just in the last stage of determining my purchase of a new O library. My research leads me to Vienna instruments standard which is about as much as I can afford. My reason for this choice is the range of articulations; the provision of the matrix to get at the articulations in one track; and the qaulity of the sounds in my Kontakt bundled VSL. I am not sure about some of the demo's though, in particular the Adagio demo for orchestral strings dissapoints.
My question is what is the spec of a PC to run Vienna instruments, or could I even begin by running on my Althon 64 3500 2 gig win pro PC. I cant afford to get more than one PC at this stage. I use SX3 so I can freeze instruments and bounce if I must.

  • You wouldnt need to freeze since the VI has an amazing ram-optimizer. Your computer sounds just fine. To get even more out of one computer check the Memory thread on the top of this sub-forum. Its a sticky.

The strings in general are what I hear people complain most about with VSL. Some like them, some dont. Note that the appasionate violin in the Barber peice is not available for sale yet, but is a gift for people who upgraded from Pro. Edition to VI extended.

  • I have just had a thought. I actually already have two PC's. I have the Althon 64 3500 with 2 gig, my current music DAW, and I have an Athlon 1600 also with 2 gig which used to be my old music machine currently used for internet. They are already networked up. Both are XP Pro.

Would there be any mileage in using the older for VSL?

My current music machine (3500) already has three hard drives, one for boot, one for audio and one for samples - which is full. My old PC currently has only one hard drive and I could purchase more for VSL - but could it hack it? Would their be any petential issues.

PS Hey Chistian you are spending a lot of time advising me, on VI and here - appreciated.

  • hehe no problem [:)] I like helping out where I can.

Regarding your old PC I think your CPU would be the bottleneck. You might be able to load a few instruments which would be nice, but dont expect it to perform anywhere near our newer computer.

Why don't you use the old one and the new one for VI via FX-Teleport? This way you could try it all out without buying any new machines. However you would need to check that your network is up to it. You might find that you need to use a VST host in order to limit the number of audio channels, but at least you would be putting this machine to good use. You could operate them via remote desktop thereby saving an extra monitor.

  • Hmm Teleport? I have heard bad things about this - buggy and difficult to set up. I was talking to Time and Space and they said that you could use a midi cable or USB - they said it was a simple thing.
VST Host? Maybe something basic? I believe Computer Music do a free sequencer - not sure if it supports VST's though. My original budget for this was a grand (UK) but now its trebled and rising - I am beginning to sweat but keeping my nerve.

Both PC's have good Asus motherboards, but the memory on both is basic and cant be optimised - I think.

This is all new territory for me and I dont yet understand the issues, will probably try to work with either 3500 PC with more memory or, use the old 1600 Athlon. Not sure whats best

    Feedback appreciated

FXT is rock solid and not in the least buggy. Having said that, support is very slow to non-existent. Most people who can't get it to work are just too stupid (or arrogant) to read the instructions, particularly the networking ones. If you follow them to the letter it will work. I can quite understand you not wanting to spend extra money, but do try out the demo and see if it suits your workflow. There are disadvantages, but they may not affect you.

Otherwise connecting the two PCs is simple, but not that cheap. You will need a VST host for the one without the sequencer as well as a MIDI interface, MIDI cable(s), decent audio card and audio cables.

  • DG thanks for the input. I have a spare sound cards - in all four.I hear what you are saying about Teleport, my info was old. Cubase also has system link? I have got a whole sack of cables. maybe I get all my system info together and mail VSL technical support for their advice before taking the plunge.

    Thanks

I have never tried system link so I have no opinion (a rare instancve for me!!!!). In nay case I would suggest that VI be spread between your machines in order to utilise them both, whatever system you use.

  • Ok folks - for budget reasons I am getting Vienna instruments in parts. I have now ordered VI Orchestral Strings 1 as a taster and will be ordering more in early June.
I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the matrix and writing some expressive parts. I shall be using my other orchestral programs as a stop gap until I am underway with more VI's. Knowing me I will find the cash somehow for the lot.

It a Holiday on Monday so I expect delivery Tues Next - drool

    Thanks for everyones help
