I'm sorry nobody's answered, Rob! If I had an intelligent answer I'd give it (and I've only just installed the player on a Windows machine, so I can't compare yet).
One thing is that the number of samples - 40K or 45k - seems to be a limitation on Macs, I think independent of the RAM you have installed. That would make sense, since Andrea Gozzi wrote a whole samplemerge routine to circumvent a Number of Open Files limitation with the previous version.
But this could be wrong, so don't quote me. I haven't figured out what happens when you load multiple instances of the player. That'll involve pulling memory out of one machine to load the other, so it's kind of a project.
