  • Minor "annoyances" with VI's in Logic 7

    Hi,

If this has previously been discussed, my apologies.

I just got the VI's for Chamber Strings and Solo Strings, and am absolutely thrilled with their sound quality, programming options, etc... but I know you all know that!

Two minor annoyances have come to my attention, and while neither is in anyway a deal breaker, both interrupt the work flow a bit.

The first one, is why do I lose control of Logic when I have a Vienna VI open? My play keycommands don't function. It's as if the VI is a totally separate application. I have to close it, and then click on Logic's background before I can hit play in Logic.

Also, why doesn't the main VI window just open up when I either insert it in an Audio Instrument, or when I double click it? I have to hit the "Show Window" button for it to open up. No other VI I own requires two mouse clicks access it.

Is there a reason why the Vienna VI's function like this? And can these sorts of things be addressed in an update?

    Just curious...

    Thanks for your help.

  • Well, I just answered my own first question. I have "Enter" assigned in Logic as my start command. And "Enter" is used in the VI's to load a selected sound, right?

Wait... never mind. None of my Logic key commands work with the VI opened. Stop, record, move ahead by marker...none of them function. With the VI window open, all key commands to Logic are blocked and ignored This can't be right...

  • There's a preference under general/audio to pass keyboard events to plug-ins.

  • Nick, does that preference work for you? From the computer keyboard and mouse, I get a total transport lock-out when I'm in VI, no matter how the preference is set.The transport in Logic Control still functions, though. I'm running Logic 7.1.1.

Thanks Nick, but that didn't work.

I also noticed that none of Logic's menu's are accessible with the VI open. It most definitely is over riding and blocking all Logic's functions, except of course, MIDI in.

Unless I'm still missing something, this seems like a problem. Can any of the Vienna team respond to why this happens?

  • Jaimo,

It seems that when VI is opened, it goes "in front" and becomes the topped application, though it doesn't appear in Activity Monitor as a separate app. Because Logic is no longer on top, your key commands won't work - until you click on a Logic Window or bring Logic to the front/top.

VI is not the only plug to do this. I have many other plugs which steal the front spot......

    Regards - Colin

  • Thanks for confirming this Colin.

I however, have no VI's that exhibit this behavior, and I have quite a few (that's an understatement).

I certainly don't mean to sound like a whiner... I'm a HUGE fan of Vienna's samples. And these new VI's are simply amazing. I have absolutely no regrets.

BUT... an Audio Instrument is working from within a host program, which means it should function entirely within the host application. When the hosts functionality gets blocked, that is a problem, as far as I am concerned.
