  • VIs and Sibelius

So several weeks on is anyone succesfully using Sibelius to play the VIs and will share their experiences so far with us.

  • can it work with Finale too ?

  • I don't know about Sibelius, but Finale 2006, while it has a lot to recommend for it, has archaic MIDI functionality that is truly shameful. They've integrated GPO, which I've found to be a disaster, so getting a standalone VI to work with it doesn't really hold promise for me. I've had to remove GPO and diasble all peripheral playback except for GM to get it to run smoothly, and it's still slower than v.2002-2004.

This is where Sibelius shines over Finale, but I've yet to see reports of Sibleius and VSL-VI working as a team. I'd be very curious to hear raves about this so that I can send them to MakeMusic to emplore them to get their act together.

  • Hardly a valid test of sib/VI functionality, but I have loaded up Sib and used it to play some chamber string VI's. As expected, it performs fine. However, I suspect you're going to need a bunch of ~ sib MIDI messages to kick off the keyswitches if you don't want to muck up your layout.

I've not really tried sending CC data from Sib, so I'm not yet sure how the modwheel-controlled patches will work.

Hope this meagre bit of information is of use.

    Kind Regards,

    Nick.

Nick, can you confirm how you got Sibelius to send Midi to the VIs?

My first project will be a string quartet.

If I have V-Stack hosting four VIs and Maple Midi cable, will I be able to route each stave of the string quartet to the relevant VI in V-Stack? I.e the stave for the first viloin will send midi data to the first solo violin VI, ditto the second violin stave sending midi data to a second solo violin VI, ditto the viola stave to the viola VI and the cello stave to the cello VI.

I want to be clear about that before I buy V-Stack.

  • Dear Dave,

Sibelius is running on a Mac G5.
All the VIs are installed on a Carillon PC.
VIs are running inside Brainspawn Forte, a VST Host (probably pretty similar to VStack)
Sibelius sends MIDI to a Digidesign MIDI I/O interface, which passes it through a MIDIMan 4-way MIDI interface into the Carillon through USB.

I plan to eventually re-implement with MIDI over LAN.

I'm not sure about Maple - I've never used it. However, it sounds feasible.

Just to clarify - in my test, I had the two Violin Staves talking to the two Chamber String Violin VIs, the Viola stave talking to the Chamber String Viola VI, and the Cello and Bass VIs likewise.

I have found Brainspawn Forte to be tremendously reliable, and I believe it may address more VIs simultaneously than VStack, but I'd need to check that out to be sure.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind Regards,

    Nick.
