  • VSL and VI - Can they play together?

    Hi -

So, I have chamber strings up and running in VI, and expect to purchase more soon. However, I would like to have access to my extant VSL collection, especailly those instruments that aren't out yet. I have two options:

    1) Make Giga play nice with Logic VST (I'm on a PC)
    2) Switch to EXS.

Can I switch to EXS (license-wise)? And what do I give up in terms of features? Gain? (Such as, the performance tool in Logic instead of stand-alone)?

    Thanks for your help,

    Eric

a rare setup .... to run giga alongside logic (5.5?) you would need virtual midi cables like the VSL midi router from the tools menue in the download section of the user area (this applies only, if giga is running on the same computer). make also sure you have a sufficient amount of RAM on this machine.

EXS24 in logic 5.5 is not an mkII which would be needed to play VSL performance elements (the performance tool for exs is only available for exs on mac for logic version 6.3.1 or higher), you could load single note instruments though. to re-route midi from the standalone performance tool (PC version) into logic does not work unfortunately.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thanks Christian -

I am successfully been running Giga with Logic on the same computer using VSL's midi-router. But I was just using Logic for MIDI, and using Giga as a virtual module (I like Giga better than EXS (Indeed, Giga is the reason I cling to the PC platform, and old Logic...) Now, of course, I have to use EXS to get to the VST VI interface, and its working great. As for EXS and VSL, I actually do have mkII - it was in the last update for platinum (5.5) for the PC. Does that mean the performance tool will work?

I am more concerned with whether I will lose functionality vs. GS if I switch to Apple and use my existing VSL (non-VI) libraries in the EXS format in Logic Pro. Does it allow the same sample lengths? Complexity of velocity-layering, etc., as Gigastudio? Or should I just strive to make GS work with Logic? (Say, re-wiring back into Logic.)

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

unfortunately the Performance Tool doesn´t work with Logic 5.5. on the PC.

The EXS version contains the same features as the GS version (the only exception here is Release Control, which is not supported in EXS24 to my knowledge).

You could use your GS computer as a dedicated "sampler computer" and use MIDI over LAN or similar to send your MIDI Data to GS.

But then again, it might be a good time to take a look at the Vienna Instruments. You might wnat to get the instruments you need most and run them on your Apple computer, and have your existing library still available on your GS computer.....

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks, Paul. I'm happy to say that I've got Giga, VST-VI, and Logic all working on the same computer - that way, I have my VSL samples in Giga, the Vienna Instruments I -do- own in Logic, and everyone is happy. So far! Then, I can make the change over selectively...
