  • Need help: LCC acting up on license download

In the License Control Center I'm downloading my licenses to authorize them with my activation codes. I bought all the boxes from the cube that are available now, and managed to download and authorize the Solo Violins package, but when trying to authorize any of the other collections the LCC comes up with the following message:

    @Another User said:

The license activation code has been used already.

An activation code can be used only once to download a license.

No matter what I do it keeps saying this. [*-)]
I've tried repairing permissions, making sure no progs run in the background, rebooting, putting key in onther USB slots, u name it.. still no luv. [:'(]

    Anyone had a similar problem?

    Cheers,
    Vagn

    G5 dual 2GHz, OSX 10.4.5 LCC 5.0.2.0

  • Tried installing LCC on my secondary Mac G4, and it still says the same thing.

    The plot thickens.... [:)]

  • vagn, unfortunately i can't find you with your forum username or email in our database - please send a short note to support@vsl.co.at ... we will look at your license state then

As someone else wrote in an old thread: do you guys ever sleep? [H]

  • hehe - there has been a saying in my former job: eating, drinking and sleeping before or after a production ... something from this must be left ...

anyway, i've checked your codes and they are reported as *unused* - the message from LCC must be somehow misleading. (solo is registered to your ViennaKey though)
do you have by chance any floating licenses showing up in your dialog?
if yes, remove them to continue the license download.

  • Hey cm,

Not sure what u mean by "floating licenses"? There are not that many options in the LCC, so that's why i'm a little puzzled here. And I did it "by the book" the first time I tried.

The above mention dialog the LCC displays leaves me only the option of pressing "OK" and "help", and neither does any good. [[;)]]

    *Scratches head*

PS: I'm now installing the libs (thanks to the demolicense) and Im getting errors on the installation. It says the install package is damaged, and then quits the installer. Doh! [:(]

  • vagn, a *floating license* can occur if you (or a lost connection) interrupt a license download or move - a respective message should show up in the LCC, but obviously this hasn't happened in your case.

the license codes except for solo strings have definately not been used - possibly you have tried to enter the code for solo strings a second time?
please let me know if you have not received all 5 confirmation emails with your activation codes - i can resend them.

  • thanks to an attentive user here an assumption about a possible reason for all such errors ... a simple but *effective* thermal problem with your DVD drive.
this has been noticed so far with drives from LG (obviously also SONY re-labels drives from LG), LaCie (also known to sell re-labeled drives from other manufacturers) and G4 superdrives.

each VSL DVD contains about 8.5 GB data which has to be read during the installation, this means the laser in the DVD drives is *flashing* for a (unusual?) long time emitting heat which has to be drained off the cage.
the drive tries to read data as fast as it can and the application (here the installer) does request it. if now a drive is specified to be say 16x, but the manufacturer *forgot* to state this is a value for an average access (as example 30 minutes within an hour) overheating is predictable.

if the temperature exceeds a certain level the adjusting of position and focus of the laser in the drive goes beyond given tolerance and problems reading (especially double layer DVDs?) occure.
incidentally i don't understand why especially OSX doesn't report this fact *as it is*, namely a read error (should be reported as something like *CRC check failed* or similar).
the installer is now receiving invalid data and stops or quits.

as suggestion for a solution: copy the files to a folder on your harddrive first (and pause for a while if you notice a disk is really hot when you change to the next DVD) or let the installer pause for some minutes if you notice this, probaly best leaving the drive open where possible.

we might not have noticed this here during our tests because most of our machines are located in our server room which is air-conditioned to ~18°C, but it didn't occur also on the others (a G4 1.25, imac G5, G5 dual 2 GHz, asus pundit, various powebooks and notebooks)

i'm tending to think this is just another symptom resp. consequence of the *more, faster, cheaper* mentality we have to face more and more also with computers

  • Good post cm.

I can confirm it to be a drive problem on my G4, as I already tried out the fix u mentioned above with success. Copying to HD was the way to go, and installing on my G5 also works flawlessly so far.

My LCC problem is still here though, so cm could u plz send me the activation codes again so I can check them against the ones I wrote down initially? I registered the wrong email address when registering in the VSL user area, but I've corected it now. Plz send to: vagnluv@gmail.com

Thx for ur kind help. [:)]

  • codes resent - and thanks for confirming the workaround for installing was successful
