  • Strings mega instance?

    Hi - my natural thought was to have Chamber Strings, Solo Strings and Ensemble Strings in each their instance. But they I figured that RAM allowing you could actually have it all in one instance - anyone doing this?

    I encountered a passage in a score where the cello line went above the range of the Orch 2. cello samples. In a cello console, I loaded in a viola matrix to handle the extended range.

    This could also come in handy with parts that double on other instruments-- for example, one the flutes switches to alto flute for a few measures and back again. In the same spirit, if a score doesn't require the section violins to play at the same time as, say, a solo violin, this type of console loading might come in handy.

    If VI were multi-timbrel, I could see the benefit of loading a diversity of sounds into one console. Imagine that each matrix could receive on a different MIDI channel-- one could ideally load a small orchestra into one single console.

    Otherwise, could you please explain more why you would load Solo, Chamber and Orch Strings into one console? I'm most intrigued by your intent...

  • Well, it was just a way of minimizing miditracks... And I figured if your using a solo violin, your not likely using the ensemble as well. But I guess the benefits aren't really that great.

  • Three reasons spring to mind:

    1) As Christian says, if you need a solo passage then it saves a MIDI track.

    2) You might want to use layered sounds; the right combination of Chamber + Ensemble violins gives a more passionate sound.

    3) If you want a divisi chord, then playing it in Chamber Strings saves it sounding too thick compared with the normal section sound.

    This is probably the cleverest observation of all. On another thread, I was speaking of a 4x divisi with the cellos. Using the Orch 2 samples for this, I suddenly had 32 cellos!! Using Chamber Strings helps ward off overkill.

    I'm always curious about how others are making the most out of VI. Someone ALWAYS comes up with some trick or idea that no one else has thought of. "Think different", Apple says. I love getting inside other people's heads!!
