  • INSTRUMENTS ONLINE updated

I'm really proud to announce a major update of our "INSTRUMENTS ONLINE"

For all newbies on our site:
Click on the INSTRUMENTS button in the top navigation bar on the right.

There are hundreds of pages with new content.

All in all 20 new instruments:

Piccolo, english horn, bass clarinet, contra bassoon

    Wagner tuba

Snare drum, bass drum, tenor drum, tamburine

    Xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, celesta

    Cymbals, suspended cymbal, gong, tam-tam

    Tubular bells, plate bells

Thanks a lot to the INSTRUMENTS ONLINE team for their wonderful work.
When we started our project it was heart's desire of mine to develop this kind of content.

Now I'm very happy that several music highschools have integrated our
Instruments Online in their eductaional programm and many students use this content for their diplomas and dissertations.

Instruments Online will grow continuously, input in our Instruments Online forum is more than welcome.

    Enjoy!

  • Thank you Herb and team for the Instruments Online section. It really is a superb resource and excellent support for VSL Users in context.

Would you consider making the section downloadable (for registered Users, if you wish)? Of course it's possible to save individual pages already, but one big file would be a lot simpler, and save a lot of time online [:)]

I don't think anyone who bought VSL realized how much -or how often- they would be smiling in the months to follow!!

    So thanks again.

  • sabine did (and still does) a great job on compiling and maintaining this part of the VSL site. a few visitors enjoyed it so much, that they obviously downloaded the whole content. i for myself have never learned so much about instruments in such a comprehensive way, also because of the non-linear structure.
and just this would be the disadvantage for creating a downloadable document - it's database driven and constantly growing. of course it will be no problem to pdf single pages but to make it as usefull as the online version one would have to restructure it - and what about the sounds?
besides all that, it would become a really huge document.
    but who knows ... christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • We'll offer Instruments Online on CD as soon as it makes sense, that is as soon as the content of the current instruments is comprehensive enough.
When we started this project one of our goals was to not only describe instruments verbally, but to provide as many sounds as possible so that everybody can get a feeling for the instruments.

At the moment we're working on sound demos for the links "Sound characteristics" and "Sound combinations" for all instruments. These will be short excerpts of classical or romantic pieces programmed with VSL samples - so stay tuned, I think it's worth waiting!
