  • Mac user wants to add PC farm

As a life time user of Mac I have decided that it may be cost effective to add a PC farm to extend my VI possibilities. I realise it is still early days but my knowledge of PCs is ZERO. Several people in the past have commented on what I might need but that was before VI was available and its characteristics appreciated.

I want to start with just one PC connected to my G5 to test ideas.
There appear to be so many possibilities that it is difficult to know where to start.
Cost is not necessarily important although I don't want to spend £1500 when two days later someone suggest all I need is £750.

The PC will be connect to the Mac by ethernet (MOL an VNC) and if FX Teleport does become available for the Mac that might be a possibility although it may be safer to opt for RME cards for now.

Storage is something I have costed and I have in fact just ordered a 4 bay Sonnet fusion for my G5.

I read with interest the posts about accessing memory on a PC and I think I am correct that various people are working on getting over a 2 GIG barrier per application if that is what they are describing.

    Software:

I keep reading about V stack.
I have seen one post about Brainspawn Forte
I don't necessarily need a full blown DAW.

I might get a second machine to run my GIGA based libraries. These are currently converted to EXS on the G5 but I would prefer to "Farm them out".

I would wecome any comments about such a setup although I fully appreciate it is a developing story.

Do I buy a Dell Computer because they are cost effective?
Do I go to a secialist Computer for Audio supplier?
Do I have one built locally from specifications suggested by experianced VSL users of PC?

Is there anyone near Cumbria in the UK who has a PC farm that can be seen in action - there are plenty of sheep farms here.

I will answer as best I can, but remember that this is my opinion [:D]

Either, but as you are a MAC user (and I assume that you have very little experience in setting up PCs) it might well be cost effective for you to buy a machine from a DAW builder and get them to set up the software and test it themselves. In my case the testing (for my farm) took about 3 days and cost £60 extra. If you go with "off the shelf" you will need to do the research yourself.
