  • Lazy question about RAM upgrade

Would someone please be kind and tell me whether there's any benefit in increasing my G5 Dual RAM (from currently 4.5 GB), and if so, by how much?

I'm likely to be using VI in Logic, but I suppose Standalone would also work with some MIDI tricksery.

Apologies for my laziness/busyness and reluctance to plow through all the threads discussing this....

    thank you

  • I have the same amount in a Dual as well. It appears you can access most of it with VI (at least the activity monitor indicates that.) So I'm going to go with another 2 gigs for sure and then maybe 8 if it seems it will help.

When things are fully loaded with no headroom in the ram the cpu gets sluggish so I'm hoping more ram will help.

  • Same inquiry here!

So far, the only thing in the way of "sluggishness" on a G5 Dual 2.5 is that with 10 instances I experience a "jerkiness" when moving Vi consoles around the monitor which gets worse as more consoles are loaded.

This issue is less crucial than audio performance, but it's clear that resources are being diverted from screen refresh rates for the sake of audio.

10 instances with one or more matrices of at least 4 x 4 has my CPU hitting at about 15%, so I'm actually considering upgrading my AGP card first. Since it will be a little while before the rest of the Cube arrives and before further Mac tests are posted, I'm going to watch and wait before upping the RAM.

If the AGP and RAM upgrades yield only marginal improvement, I dread the thought of upgrading the CPU so soon!! [8-)]
