To me, you can always clear the cell by clicking the "X" and then load the next sound to hear defaults. But if you don't clear the cell and you drag a new preset into it, you're saying, "I like these edits but I want to hear how they perform with a different sound."

This suggests a larger question, though. Might the time come when VI has its own preference pane, and default behaviors such as this can be chosen?

the answers to all the questions regarding the future VI development depend a lot on the technical possibilities on the programming side. Our main focus is to keep it simple and effective. So let´s see when a "Preferences" option is going to be part of the VI...

Have a local menu (in the cell) with these options:
Copy cell settings
Paste cell settings

Then you can:
1 - Copy settings
2 - Drag in new cell
3 - Paste in your copied settings

Yes, copy and paste cells would be profitable for all sorts of reasons. We could open two VI GUI's and just swap cells from one to another. That would save some menu navigation.

I'm doing a lot of exploring within cells, so a little "Mute cell" icon in its corner would be nice. Right now we have to select them alternately and drag down the volume.

I also sense an intuitive prompting to click in the H and V span areas to bring up a cell for editing instead of the little cell boxes.

But I'm only beginning to learn this interface. And once templates are established, there may be less of this kind of issue.

In conjunction with this, I wish that the "empty" feature was on the console itself instead of at the top of the file menu.

When I opened a VI console the first time, I saw the red X and the word EMPTY, thinking it was a status indicator-- the word "empty" being an adjective rather than the verb it turned out to be. But scrolling to the top of the list each time can get confusing when working with files very low on the list-- scrolling up and down and up and down again... it's easy to lose your place.

I'll vote for copy, paste, and drag. Seems quite natural and intuitive-- actually, I did these without thinking about it. It's impossible to always know in advance how a particular combination of patches will work best in a custom matrix until the options have been explored. Using, say, 4 patches is not *so* bad, but if you've auditioned 12 or more patches and want to rearrange them-- you won't be sequencing anything for a good long while. Having quick access to the "empty" button would expedite this process further.

Ah, Dietz. I don't mean to be "that" picky, just subjective while evaluating the intuitiveness of the new toy. The wording is really a moot point, now that its function is "clear". [:D] We all have more pressing issues, I'm sure.

But having it on the console instead of in the menu would save a bit of search and scroll time.
