    Do the VSL techs have a preference on Journaling for the configuring of a SATA internal sample-only / read-only drive for Vienna Instruments? Probably much ado about little, but now is the time to ask. Thanks.

    basically the *journaled* option is nothing i would choose for a read-only drive, or even for a drive holding samples or audio at all.
    IMO it makes only sense for system drives if no big files are stored/erased/updated on them - otherwise you would loose capacity little by little. the journaled option saves changes and so eat up your free space storing hidden files, also it makes writing files slower.

    Apple themselves recommend journaling is disabled for scratch discs in Final Cut Pro due to reliability/fast transfers issues. I would expect the same to be the case for DAW sample and audio drives.

    Thanks cm and Julian. Is journaling of any value when recording live to disk? If not, I guess it doesn't serve our purposes at all.

    I think journaling's main purpose is to give additional protection to the discs directory structure (particularly of files that may be in use) when unforseen things happen like a power outage or a disc connector being disconnected.

    As either of the above would trash a file that was in the middle of being recorded live to disc the simple answer is no!

    The overriding case with files is any file that has value to you (crucial for irreplacable files) should be backed up to a diferent drive - in the case of live recording ASAP and particularly before moving location. That way if, or more likely when, your drive fails or is lost you don't 1. Have to pay thousands for someone to try and rescue your data 2. Have a second chance if the drive's been stolen, dropped, etc.
