    I see that Activity Monitor shows something called <vsldaemon> as (Not Responding)

    What is this? When do I begin worrying....?
    (G5 running OS10.4.5)

    don't worry 'bout the daemon - it has no Application Loop, so it does not respond.
    but it will to VI, however.

    i'd like to add: in OSX process viewer and in windows taskmanager sometimes processes (daemons) show up as *not responding* - this does not conclusively mean the process (or application depending on the process) is hanging. in most cases the process ist just too busy to *give feedback* to the process viewer and just _appears_ to be not responding.

    the validation process of the AU is a good example for this behaviour - killing the process at this state or trying to open additional applications which rely on such a process might lead to unexpected results.

    another example would be a restore process of an entourage or outlook database - here you could notice the same effect.

    The VSL daemon does have one point of interest: if it is running, you can't register another library. The Syncrosoft wizard will report that the key is being used. This is true even after you quit Logic, because the daemon is still running. When I force quit the VSL daemon using the Activity Monitor, the wizard worked. (Before that, I was powering down and up.)

    you are obviously a power user and know quite a lot about the gear you are using.

    vsldaemon takes the load off <cold start> initialization. this speeds up further opening of instances. and again: it is <not responding> because it has no application loop of its own (the OS does not know anything about it ) . further on it does indeed support VI since it is a portion of code which does apply to any instance, thus reducing load strains etc. and it is _not_ under your (users) control.
