  • VI performance trill

    I really like the peformance trill. It works well for so many things including tight string arpegios that were virtualy impossible even with peformance legato.

    My question is. It sounds like there are many varitions on each note (to avoid the machine gun effect) is that how it works? If so that is very cool and it is going to work well for a ton of other things.

    Yes, these are multiple variations, exactly 6 different up and 6 down variations for each intervall step. The concept is an hybrid of intervall peformances and repetition performances.

  • I admit I don't fully understand the performance trill instrument. Herb, could you explain in more detail how this instrument was played during the recording process, and how the repetition logic works? Does playing speed change the samples played? Does it incorporate the old performance grace notes samples? Under what conditions are the interval repetitions triggered?

  • The mapping/editing concept is very complex, the performing is simple.
    You just play trills (or fingertremolos) on your keyboard and you get the right result (as it is shown in the corresponding videotutorial)

    There are no repetitions on the same key, but you get different intervall samples if you play trills, so these intervall sample changes are similiar to the repetition algortyhm.

    If you plerform C4 - D4 -C4 - D4 -C4 - D4 you don't get the same intervall sample twice, every intervall sample is a new one.

    Important for the concept is that the musician in the Silent Stage peformed reals (slow) trills, these trills were sliced and stacked with a sustained loop. So you could perform these peformance trill at any speed, also slower than the original performed tempo, which gives a maximum of flexibility.

    What happens when you don't play trills? For example, what happens when you play C4 - D4 - E4 - C4 - D4 - E4?

    At what point does the trill sample switch over to the sustained loop? Is only the transition portion of the sample from the trill? Are you crossfading or hard cutting to the sustain?

  • c4 - d4 = whole up / version 1
    d4 - e4 = whole up / version 1
    e4 - c4 = major third down / version 1
    c4 d4 = whole up / version 2
    d4 - e4 = whole up / version 2

    generally there is a treshhold of 3 seconds, if during this treshhold time an certain intervall sample is triggered once again, automatically the next available intervalsample version is triggered

  • does this 3 second threshold apply for other instruments? say stacs or perf reps. when you don't repeat the note imediatly but you repeat it soon enough after that a variant sound better then starting over.

  • 3 seconds are exclusively for the performance trill,

    there ar different values for different performances sometimes also depending on the instrument
