  • "Live" recording project tips.

    Hey All,

I'm in the process of trying to put together a CD of my concert music. This would be a studio recording of live musicians (not VSL, and hence a little off-topic -- but among the lot of you, you guys seem to know pretty much EVERYTHING). I'm wondering about the whole Eastern European recording routine. This is not orchestral music, but I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'd like to do it all as cheaply as possible. Does anyone here, by any chance, have any contact info, or general tips, on finding musicians, studios, producers, in Eastern Europe? Also, is Prague still the place to go, or are there other hot-spots for this kind of project?

I should also mention that this is contemporary concert music. Not at all "modernist", or unlistenable (you could check out "reflectere" in the Projects section for an idea), in my opinion, but contains some tricky passages, and would require sympathetic and at least somewhat dedicated performers.

    Any thoughts, anybody?

    J.

  • I've recorded in Prague, Bulgaria and Budapest and I have colleagues who have recorded in most of the ex-USSR states. Out of these I would say that Budapest was by far the best. try contacting Czaba at Concert Media (goggle for email and phone number.
However, also be warned that these musicians are nowhere near as fast as in London, NY or LA so much more recording time is needed. For just a few sessions it has always been cheaper overall for me to record in the UK. There have been many reasons why I have recorded abroad, most of the Union related, but many of these reasons have now been erased, which is why I haven't recorded in eastern Europe for 5 years.

  • DG,

Thanks for the heads-up! Indeed, I haven't heard much talk about it for 5 or 6 years. I did a Master Class in Prague back in '99, and it seemed to be the thing to do, at that time. But not much news since...

I'm based in the UK now, and am living up near Leeds. Do you know anyone in my area (not that it matters whether they're close -- I'm from Canada, where the next decent-sized city is always at least 8 hours away!). I'm aiming to record about an hour's worth of chamber music, drawing on a pretty wide variety of instruments, so I'll probably start by tracking down a Conductor and/or Producer. Any names I should look up?

    thanks!
