  • Ideal Slave Computer for VI

I purchased 2 64 bit dual core PC's a few months ago just for running my VSL in gigastudio 3 as slave machines. I want to switch to VI as soon as possible and don't even want to run giga on those machines if I can help it. Are my new computers going to be about as good at running VI as they were at running giga stuff? Or Should I get two new G5 Macs to replace the PCs. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks guys

  • There is no reason to think that the PCs won't be good enough for running VI if they were purchased for GigaStudio. I will be converting my machines gradually as the cube will take a few months to arrive.

Actually they should do even better with the VIs. There will be real-world comparisons available soon.

  • I can only put 4 gigs of ram in my PCs where you can put 8 gigs in a mac. Does that make the mac a better choice for VI?

This is an interesting question that hasn't yet been answered. AFAIK the only way that you could utilise all that RAM on a Mac would be through a host like Logic, and even then you wouldn't be able to get more than 3.7Gb.
Tests have shown that you can get Nuendo up to about 2.7GB, so on that front a Mac currently seems to be able to access more RAM.
However, then other thing that I would like to know is that if the VI is being used on a PC via a network with FX-Teleport, then each instance should be have the 2Gb limit, but when running multiple instances would that mean that we could use all of the RAM in the machine? The other thing to consider is the 3Gb switch; this may or may not help, I think that we'll have to wait for the testing.
I certainly won't be buying any new machines until we are much further down the road.

Currently it is about 16 GB. Running multiple apps (multiple instances of VI) should allow the usage of more RAM. Also how do apps like AULab perform? Or maybe some developers et some virtual racks for VSL VI - letting you access 16 GB ram. (RAX or so)

    Will get interesting.
