New computer for new VSL

Hello,

I was planning to buy an extra PC for use with Giga. But now, with the coming out of the new Symphonic Cube and the VI, it looks as if it would be better to buy a Mac G5 with a lot of Gb's Ram and a fast harddisc, because it can hold much more samples. My question: I am hesitating: should I buy the fastest G5 (Quad) available, or is that 'overkill'. In other words will VSL actually use the fast CPU or is a slower G5 sufficient. I will only use this computer for VSL, as a stand-alone.
I use another (older) Mac for Logic and notation (because I don't believe in putting all my eggs in one basket).

I hope someone can help me out here.

I use a G5 and it's great with the current (old) VSL Pro Edition. I myself plan to wait to hear exactly how the new Vienna Instruments software gets around the OS X limit on the number of files open.

Postings here have confirmed no need to use EXSManager any more (for that purpose), but have also said to wait for a few days to see the details of how this important issue is addressed.

If the VI can "theoretically" open 48,000 files but is thwarted by the operating system's current limit of 8,000-something concurrently open files, ... well, that would make it a worse choice than a PC. So, let's wait and see what they say!!

That's a good question now - it wasn't so much of an issue a couple weeks ago. More interestingly perhaps is - before, with two or more Macs and running Logic Pro on the main Mac as it were - you couldn't access more than one EXS24 - in other words, employ more ram from nodes and port more instruments into the main Mac. Now, and I'm not sure about this yet, EXS24 doesn't count for anything re: VI. Therefore, as VI is a plug-in, I wonder if this is going to be useful in terms of more instruments and therefore more ram utilization via nodes?

Maybe Paul S has some thoughts on this.

The faster your computer, the more comfortable your workflow (I guess it has always been like that).

The details of our tests will be published when they are ready and confirmed, I´m sure that is also in your interest [[;)]]

Do the quad Macs automatically access all the processors or will software have to address that as with the dual processors?

I would say DON'T buy the Quad -- total overkill -- and you'll need every penny you've saved for MIR, and the PC to run it on! (Or at least CPU, RAM, etc. upgrades for you current PC... if you have one.)... or it will be a hardware device... and you'll still need to sell the kids to buy it!
It's expensive to have the best of the best!

But seriously, the Quad will be overkill, given that it's MIR which will require the "heavy lifting" not the Vienna Instruments.

Nodes,

There is no indication that any AU instrument will be able to use Logic's node capability.

This is not just an exs limitation. It applies to all non logic au's.

Hope that changes in the future.
