  • Virtual memory/ streaming from disc/ Ram usage

    Hi.

I'm usually using A LOT of instances of EXS with VSL instruments while I'm working. In order to do so, I have to use the "Virtual memory" option (samples streamed from the hard disk), and this works really great. But seing the video og Ram-handling, I get a little afraid that this crucial option is not included in the VI. Could someone comment on this, please...

    Hey Flemming, [[;)]]

    The plugin is streaming. [H]

    The Vienna Instruments are streaming.
It would be impossible to load 25000 stereo samples on a windows PC with 2 gig Ram without streaming. That's more than the double amount of samples I could load into Gigastudio (on the same PC)

  • And to boot the format uses a lossless compression scheme (according to the specs) that decompresses on the fly allowing you to get more loaded.

  • As a current user of Halion3 who enjoys working quite happily on a single Pentium 4 with VSL at the moment, Halion offering a pre-load of 0.1 seconds, can VSL confirm that with their lossless compression technique, they will be able to at least match what Halion currently enables me to load in? Can they also confirm that the lossless compression technique will not add an unnecessary burden on the CPU?

  • 0.1 seconds should equal about 64kB per mono voice which is also equal to Gigas' pre-load buffers. In some post herb or someone else from VSL noted they could load more instruments (didn't I read twice as many?) with the new VI than with GS on the same hardware. That should imply 32kB or maybe 48kB taking into account the GS load limit and the fact that a user-mode application possibly could make use of more memory.

  • As the original post referred to EXS, could someone please comment on that environment? Specifically, in addition to the EXS option to use virtual memory, we have the OS-level limitation of only allowing 8,000-ish files to be open at once. EXSManager Pro got around that limit, freeing up practically the entire VSL library to loaded into RAM on a single G5 (in my experience). How does he VI approach handle that problem?

  • Detailed information will be posted within the next days.

  • Loooking forward to the official details, Paul.

Until then, I noticed in another posting from Paul that the Vienna Instrument deals with "monolithic files." I suppose that means that there are not separate files for each and every sample. We'll see.

  • ThatĀ“s correct, you donĀ“t have access to the samples within the patches.
