How/What/Why?

OK this new product sounds really wonderful. My questions revolve around how to use it and integrate it with what I already have. I hope the questions don't sound too stupid but I'm asking because I'm relatively new and I really don't know.

I've got the VSL Pro Edition and the Performance Set. Computers: two 64 bit PC's, each with 4GB of RAM. One PC has GS3 Orch., on a 160 GB system drive plus two 500 GB hard drives (2x250 RAID 0) with the VSL Pro on one drive and other sample libraries on the second drive. The second PC has Sibelius 4, Sonar 5 Producer and Samplitude, all on the 160 GB system drive, as well as the two 500 GB hard drives. MIDI interface is MIDIoverLAN which has worked perfectly so far.

So, on which computer would I put the VI or am I supposed to acquire a new one for that?. Also, how does the VI system integrate with the other VSL products if at all?. Is it entirely separate like a Kontact Instrument (e.g. EWQLSO)? Do I understand that there is a Plug In and a stand alone version? If I chose the plug in would I then set it up with Sonar5? If I chose the stand alone would I put it on the same computer with the other samples? And lastly, if I purchase this am I essentially giving up most of the usage of my other VSL products?

Again, I hope these questions are not too much. I would really like to understand before making a decision. Thank You.

Hi Poppa,

I think you probably need to read further through the forum to get detailed answers and to understand the new instruments a little further - I think all your answers are there. But to get you moving forward I'll pass what is only my understanding of the situation. Maybe later, someone with more experience can confirm all this for you.

Pretty much, but again it depends if you want to keep them for backup purposes.

As before, probably not with the other samples, but that's your call - you wouldn't NEED them anyway. And I believe the VI is NOT multitimbral, so in stand-alone mode it could only manage to play one articulation/instrument at a time.

If the VI is not multitimbral it is not very useful I think? I would want to use it for orchestral set ups, so that seems not to be possible then?

My understanding is that you would just need to load extra instances of the VI plug-in within your sequencer in order to gain multitimbral functionality.

And what if I would use it as a stand-alone?

Exactly...my guess is you would only have one instrument to play with.

Another alternative of course is to use an AU or VSTi 'wrapper'.

Thank you so much. Your information is quite clear and seems entirely in line with what I am getting from reading the other threads. I definitely have some concerns about the stand alone version. Clearly, I need to learn a lot more.

At present, I'm leaning toward the Plug In version on the sequencing computer (Sonar5) which has a huge amount of unused hard disk space because it's new. I would then keep my sample computer as is. This way I don't lose anything I've already worked on. Also, since VSL seems best suited for "serious" music, there are other genres for which the other sample libraries might still be more appropriate. I could even perhaps use bits of the VSL as a supplement to those. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to use all the various libraries and sample players, including the "old" VSL Pro, to suit the variety of musical situations extant.

I hope others will continue to post their understanding as they get it because I'm still just beginning to get involved in all this. It is an interesting and marvelous time to be a composer!

Please someone tell me if I've missed something, but I think you'll get the VST, AU & Stand-Alone versions in the box - that would make sense to me. So then at least you can try out various working methods.

I don't think it's like before when you had to choose a platform to run it on.

Thanks again. I understand that we will get all the versions. My question really is about the best way to use it rather than exactly what we'll be getting. I'm really, quite selfishly, fantasizing about how I would set this all up given what I already have. This is probably different for each individual based on their set-up and musical needs. Having the options is always a good thing (thanks Herb). Just as with a lot of the previous sample material, we may have it but not use it because it doesn't fit our requirements at the time. Yet, we still want to have it - at least, I do [:)] .
