    Hey Dietz,

    I was just curious if you could give me any EQ advice for eq'ing the violin ensembles. I basically want to get rid of the nasal like frequencies and some highs. I want to warm them up more.
    I experiment alot with my studio setup and my headphones but judging from the looks of the studio you guys mix in, I would think you could give me a more accurate setting.

    Well - like I wrote in a private mail some time ago:

    If you want to make the strings less "direct", more "easy", I'd try to drop a range (using a Q of about one octave) around 3.700 Hz for 3 to 4 dB, especially with the violins. Another range to lose the "squeek"-factor (no real term, but you get the message) is around 2.500 Hz - just experiment a bit.

    Another way to "lighten" up the string section is to use a little more reverb for them. Just make sure that the reverb you employ is not too "muddy" (not too much low-mids - use an EQ for the reverb-return, if you like), yet not too shrill.

    "Nasal" would translate to a range between 700 to 1000 Hz in my book, so try to lose some energy in this range.

    If you want to dampen the treble, a smooth shelving EQ starting at 7 or 8 kHz is a save bet; drop it for 2 or 3 dB and listen if you like what you hear. - Another "dirty trick" to smoothen the hi-end is to distort (!) the signal, subtly with some kind of tube/tape simulator (or the Real Thing, if you happen to own them ;-] ...). The result should be a "fatter", less "peaky" signal, which may or may not be what you're looking for.

    ... I have to add that all this are rude estimations, because there is no thing like absolute truth in audio, only personal preferences, and finally it depends a lot on the musical (and technical) context what to do .
