    Heya, everyone.
I produce pop music and I'm thinking about buying the Performance set (promotion is very tempting).
    Have a question though...
If I get just the Performance set will I have stunning quality of strings (legato and that gorgeous sound)? Or do I have to buy additional instruments (Orchestral package?)?
I want to use the strings in the background only, no film scoring or classical arrangements...

Thanks for taking the time to answer...

    Pete

The Performance Set is not self-contained; you will need to get the strings from the Pro Edition as well.

    DG

  • for the info...

Maybe I should be looking at something different then, Strings only?

If you have no need for the strings to be "up front" then Pro Strings might just do it for you. I would also check out Chamber Strings, as the smaller sound might just be what you're looking for.

  • thanks DG...

I don't need them "up front" in the sense that they might just play an intro or outro and be in the background during the song.

But I want them to be recognizable and sound unbelievably...

I look at the options you mentioned

    Cheers

  • I do pop string arrangements with perflegato strings a lot and they sound incredible, so start there for sure. You must build the arrangement up line by line in a linear fasion but this gives you the gorgeous sound you are looking for as well as a transparancy arrangement-wise (which sits beautifully in a good track.)

If you need a string pad you can get buy with many of the older libraries but it would be good to have filter control for dynamics (mod wheel control for crossfading between velocity layers.) So I would have the cube strings on your wish list because they are the best money can buy as with all VSL samples.

Chamber strings are not what you're looking for now. They will be a wonderful addition allowing for various orchestration realizations but the rich stunning full sound (I think) you're looking for is the larger section Pro or even 1st edition (which is what I have.)

  • for your input.

I definitely don't want pad strings.

I want to build the arrangement line by line.

So should I go with the Strings Pro edition? Is it what you meant by "perflegato strings"?

    Cheers

  • Pro or even 1st edition Performance Package. Both give you all you need. There are art files for the 1st edition that allow you to combine several patches into one and switch with modwheel. For the money I would go 1st edition. You'll be in heaven in a hurry. People are just floored by these strings.

    Dave Connor

I guess this is the only package available now, which is fine because it has muted strings as well. The art files are for GS3.

  • now I'm confused...

DG in his first post said the Performance set didn't include strings and that I'd have to purchase them additionally... [*-)]:

I thought you meant this http://www.vsl.co.at/english/pages/products_%26_shop/symphonic_edition/strings.htm

But if the Perf set does include strings I'd be happy to have it as it also has other instruments...

forgive my ignorance in the subject

    Thanks again

    Pete

  • No, go to the link I showed you. That other link is NOT the performance instruments. Those are polyphonic (for pads etc.) My link: Click on Articulations and notice each instrument has perf in front of it: that's how you know. Buy em, you'll be freaking out about 1 second after you play a note..

dpcon@pacificnet.net if you want any help setting up etc.

  • that's what I thought... the Perf set has all the instruments listed with various articulations, so I was a bit surprised that I would need to buy additional strings...

Thanks for clarifying it for me...

    Best

    Good luck
