  • Which format? plz help!

ok, i have halion, and halion can import gigastudio files, exs24, and steinberg halion files, obviously. I also have kontakt, so the NI kontakt format i would be able to use as well. But basically, i only have halion and kontakt to work with. I can use all the formats, because halion can import most of them, but which format would you say is the right format for me? any help would be awsome, as i am making a purchase soon.

Don't believe the blurb; the import features of these samplers are not nearly 100% accurate. If you don't intend to use any performance instruments you might get away with converting from other formats, but from what I've heard the performance instruments are a no-go.

  • what? so you're saying that there is no format that i could get that halion of kontakt can handle where i'd be able to use the performance instruments? somehow i find that to be false. plenty of people have halion and/or kontakt formats of vsl.

    OK, you know best.......

  • so which format could i get where VSL performance instruments would work then?

  • "OK, you know best....... "

    Thanks for the laugh, D.

Oneilio, we have no way of knowing what format is best for you. But until you've actually attempted a translation, you are in danger of over-estimating translation programs even if they're built-in. These convertors might get the sample assignments right, but after that, it's a throw of the dice.

Maybe you could do it with a performance instrument -- I've never run Halion. But I've converted entire libraries from Giga to EXS. It's a mixed bag, my friend. The idea that one might easily move a VSL program to any platform is a simplistic assumption. Buyer beware. As a rule, the samples convert (actually, they're just re-assigned -- they usually remain wav files), but the programming is often lost in the translation.

If translators worked so easily, why is VSL charging that much for side licenses?

If you've got Halion, I really encourage you to buy the Halion format.

    Cheers.

  • Hello all,

sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the assistance!

Indeed, it is a tedious work to convert all our programs to HALion, Kontakt and EXS, but therefore you get working sampler instruments [H]

Oneilio, you can get all Horizon Series products working flawlessly for both HALion and Kontakt, OPUS 1 (and maybe 2) is a very good and comprehensive introduction to the Vienna Symphonic Library:

    http://www.vsl.co.at/english/pages/products_%26_shop/horizon_series/intro.htm

Please click on the products and find a detailed articulation list of all instruments included. All Performance Instruments work with the Performance Tool.

Here are the setup guides for each platform, to give you an overview of the routing:
