How is the Sustenuto Blend supposed to work?

As I understood this instrument, it is to be used for the case U want to play a legato line, but the notes are longer then the legato samples, so the don´t reach the next note?!?

So after playing the second note, while holding the first one, I move up the MODWHEEL and the second note sounds as long as I need it to sound.

But what happens to the third note?

When I move the MOD down, the second note stops. Keeping the MOD up, I get no sound on the third note.

Did I get the sense of the sustenuto-blend wrong?

(In this case I tried the VC-3_perf-leg_p_slow+SB of the Chamber Strings)

Hi Felix,

you are blending to a sutained note when you use the Modulation Wheel. When you are moving on to the "third" note, move the MODWheel fast while you play the Legato connection. That´s it. Otherwise you will hear a "normal" sustained note.

Honestly, I think the sus-blend instruments are difficult to play "live" (of course this could just be a reflection on my playing). I use them with my sequencer where I can fine tune exactly when and how fast to make the modwheel switches. Generally, I switch into the sustain gradually about halfway into the note. Then I switch out of the sustain exactly at the start of the new legato note so that I can hear that lovely legato connecting noise. Switching too early will create a slight gap in the sound. Switching too late will "remove" the legato connecting noise.

Obviously this is a GS3 thing, which I hope to be using from next week. Just one question; at the moment I use the modwheel for controlling the release time with the legato samples. Will it be possible for me to re-map it to another controller, as I would hate to lose this facility?

Personally I find the need for these sustenoto blends one of the most irritating things about VSL. I really wish one day the notes in the performance legatos will be long enough.

I have even considered sitting down for 3 days to make up new patches that combine (crossfade nicely) the short performance legato samples with the normal (or even looped) ones. We could even share some of the workload - I'll make a start with vn-14 and vcs-8....

Why aren't the legato files looped? I just realized this recently as I was putting together a piece that blatantly rips off Shostakovich's 1st movement of his 11th Symphony. Luckily the notes end exactly where I want them, so it's not an issue right now, but I imagine it will be later on.

Is there a way to get around this besides the sostenuto blends?

You can make the notes longer for all ensembles by stepping on the sustain pedal when you want to play a longer note and then retrigger the same note and release the sustain pedal. This way you mix a starting note to the playing note.

Sounds complicated, but it´s easy. Just make sure to retrigger the note with the right velocity......
