  • VSL and Notebooks is there anyone using this setup?

I think this could be a topic of some interest for some people.

My idea is to use my mac powerbook for sequencing and a pc notebook for GS with VSL.

I'm thinking about an ACER 435 notebook with P4 2.53 Ghz and 1GB RAM and Win XP. On both machines (Mac and PC) there would be RME Multiface interfaces. The Acer Travelmate 435 does have an intel 845PE chipset with 533FSB and is around €1500 or even less. I would connect a 200GB firewire or USB 2.0 harddisk for the VSL library.

Is there anyone using notebookswith VSL? Do i run into trouble with Acer laptops?
Would it be enough to run 1 of them or do i have to buy 2?
Any problems with Firewire or USB 2.0 drives regarding speed and so on?
    Any realworld tests out there?

    Any help is greatly aprecciated

    Cheers

    Claude

  • I'm by no means a specialist, but I had just recently unsolvable problems on a friend's Acer-notebook, which sports an exotic ALI-chipset (obviously _not_ what you are considering) - latencies below 50 ms would not work with the RME/HDSP. OTOH, on my already obsolete, Intel-based PIII/1000 Gericom laptop I am able to achieve clickfree latencies as low as 1.5 ms, depending on the task.

My advice would be: try before you buy.

  • Dietz . Thanx a lot for your help. Obviously you're really talking about a strange chipset - Ali [:D]
    Anyone out there using notebooks?

    Cheers

  • Claude,

Yes. I do use a notebook as a additional GS computer, when I do need it. I had it custom configurated /Intel Pentium 2000MH/704 MB RAM , so it it has no brand, is very ugly, but does work fine. System is WINDOWS 98 and sound card RME Multiface. No latency problems at all, very stable (knock on wood.....) , maybe better as my tower GS machines! I also did try with sequencer or notation software on the same machine, and it did also work without any problems.

PS: I forgot to write that the sample are on a separate Maxtor Firewire hard drive.

  • Hi Iwan

Thanx a lot for your reply. All info's regarding this thread are more than welcome.
BTW. I have some family members living near Malaga in Southern Spain. I am at least twice a year in Spain, so tell me if you need some swiss cheese or so [:D]

Do you think i could live with one notebook and record all the stuff into the Mac/Nuendo for mixdown? To be more specific, can i run GS to it's limit with 160 voices?

    All the best

This is a dangerous question.....because apparently different notebooks do perform very differently. Using VSL with my notebook I never had this problem because I normally reach the RAM limit before the 160 voice limit. I did try with the Boesendorfer to check the voice limit and I did reach 154 having no problems. If you like I can check the exact specifications of my notebook and let you know.

  • Hi Iwan

Thanx a lot for the kind invitation. Sorry, it may sounds stupid, but are you talking
about Gerona near Blanes and Lloret de Mar right after the french border?

Thanx also for your further information regarding the notebook specs. If you can get some technical info it would be much appreciated.

Anyway talk to you soon and

I will post the exact specifications and parts of my notebook later on today, because I have to ask the technician which did help me building it.

  • Hi Iwan

this threads slowly develops into sort of a private chat. Where do you come from originally and what was the reason to move to spain (except the weather of course)?
Sorry, actually it's non of my business, but of course i wonder.

I'm looking forward to the tech specs regarding the notebook.

    Talk to you soon

Yes you are rigth: the weather! I am 60 years young and - more ore less - retired [:D] More infos about my greatness at http://www.iwanroth-sax.com

Here are the specifications of my notebook which I could find out:

    Processor: Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.0 Ghz
    Intel net-Burst Architecture Units
    478-in FCPGA package
    L2 Cache 256KB (Williamate, 0.18um) / 512 KB Northwood, 0.12 um
Core Logic SID650 + SIS961 chipset with graphic, audio, modem and Ethernet controler integrated

Max memory 512 MB x2MB DDR RAM PC2100 compatible
LCD 15.1 Ðinch active matrix TFT display
LAN Integrated PCI fast Ethernet function
    Firewire 1 connection

IMHO, If I would be in the situation to choose a notebook for VSL, I would wait a little and buy a Macintosh with Logic and the ESX24 version. After listening the new demo of Christian ....., I think this is the way to go.

  • Good Morning Spain

Thanx a lot for your detailed info. I appreciate this a lot.
I had a look on the net regarding the place you live. Seems to be
    pretty nice down there.

I was thinking about to buy the EXS version, but since i really want to do
everything with notebooks i think the GS solution fits my needs

But i do use the new 17" Apple powerbook for audio recording and sequencing
and use the notebook as a hardware sampler. This way i can also travel to spain and elsewhere and having my setup in my bag. I was always attracted by the idea of beeing independent.

    Es grüesst härzlich
