  • Dynamics - How to get the right shape of a crescendo?

Hi! When I write an crescendo from p - fff, I don’t get the dramatic shape of it. How to deal with dynamics within Dorico?
I’m working with the templates and I turn on the CC2 controller, even if it not when loaded, otherwise all crescendos become even weaker.
And how to get the attacks stronger? It is impossible to get sfz from a > or a ^

    Any suggestions?

  • Hello Cadenza!

Did you check out our optimizing tips about controlling dynamics with Dorico yet?

  • Hi Andi!

    Thanks for your reply!

I just check that page again but frankly I don't understand it: First - from where is that screenshot from? I can't find it in my Play section in Dorico Pro 5, I guess it is from an earlier version of Dorico , since I can't find the editor of Time (I my version it is labeled Tempo and I guess it's the same?), and Chords on a different place?
Second: When the templates from Wizard are loaded the CC2 is not activated and I have to change to ON, n order to at least get some dynamic changes. If I add a button for CC28 as described - since it is not loaded by default in the plugin (strange!) , which one shall I choose (there are several alternatives in the popup-menu) and can I control it without going in to edit curves etc. by connect it to CC2 or CC1 in a way?

    Best,

    Anders

  • Hi Anders!

The screenshots are from an earlier Dorico version indeed, but the functions are still there. Simply select "Add automation" to add a controller lane like CC11 (for expression) or CC28 (for VelXF On/Off) (see screenshot).

Most expression maps are prepared for Velocity plus CC2, but some are prepared for Velocity plus CC1. Anyway, you don't have to care about that. If you are using a playback template made with Dorico Wizard, everything is set up as it should be. Dynamic marks and hairpins will always send all necessary MIDI data to the instrument.

With a CC11 lane you can automate expression (volume).
With a CC28 lane you can turn VelXF on and off. Dynamic marks will work regardless if VelXF is turned on or off. Hairpins under single notes can only work with VelXF turned on.

I hope this clarifies things for you.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

and thanks again! Maybe it is confusing because the terms are different for the two versions of Dorico; ¨Add Automation¨ is Add Editor in Dorico 5 and the feature of CC 28, I don't have any use since the RAM of my computer allows me to have Vel.XF turned on all the time (the button next to CC2 in blue).
Concerning CC11 it is always set to 127 so I guess I have possibility to reach even softer than Dorico's pianississimo and beyond ¨al niente¨. That was my subject in a former thread, as you remember. But the other end of the scale - how obtain a crescendo to reach as in pp cresc al fff?
Maybe there's a way to set Dorico's parameters to obtain what I want? I've done that with some articulation like increase the > and the ^ articulations in the payback option, however not 100% satisfied.

I guess I have two try along...

    Best,

    Anders

I've often changed Expression from CC11 to CC1, so that the two work in tandem (without having to use the 2nd controller in Dorico)

In order to scale Expression relative to CC1, use the little square - to the right - and change the power curve to taste...
