Thank you so very much knobworld, this is the first thing I've seen that cleared my issue up (the 'slave' by LAN had the self-assigned address and I had no clear idea of what to set for a static IP. The wifi on the master but off on the slave allows me to have a coherent address to begin with. (With the self-assigned IP the second machine was connected, and VE Pro worked but it had weird issues it doesn't normally have.)
