Are you sure you don't want to use a backslash? (\)

  • On a Mac, this should be "/"; on Windows, it is "\". I don't think that is a problem.

Also, you need to restart the player before the presences take effect.

    Should say "preferences take effect"

  • MacOS Sequoia 15.2
    z shell
    Synchron Player 1.3.1865

    Trying this route: Preset, User.

Why is there no pull-down menu here?

Please enter a new folder name
It does not accept any legitimate folder name, for example

    /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/"Vienna Synchron Player"/Presets

    or
    /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/"Vienna Synchron Player"/Presets/"01 Strings + Harp"
both return Please enter a valid folder name. These folder names are valid because the Unix cd command can switch to them.

Is this related to the Unix shell, since different shells handle directory names differently?

  • OK, let's try this one more time.

    1. Launch Synchron Player
    2. Click the cog wheel icon in the upper right corner(to the left of the Filename icon)
    3. Replace whatever is in the User Presets Folder field with:
      /Users/user_name/Documents/
    4. Close the options dialog
    5. Quit the Synchron Player
    6. Relaunch the Synchron Player
    7. In the Filename panel hover over the User entry and click the folder icon
    8. type a simple folder name such as test (spaces allowed no quotes necessary) and click OK
    9. hover over the test entry and click the file icon
    10. type a simple file name such as my preset (spaces allowed, no quotes necessary) and click OK
    11. Look in your Finder under /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/Vienna Synchron Player/Presets
You'll see your folders and preset files here.

  • I entered /Users/user_name/Documents

    The PRESET files /Prime_Edition_Tutorials_v1.5/"07 Varsovie"/"Varsovie Presets"/"#01 01 1st Violins - VelXF sus.vsynpreset", all the way to #36 51 Tutti brass - 15 players - VelXF sus.vsynpreset*
are now showing up under User Presets. It's a small progress.

Earlier, I tried to save dummy files, and it worked.
I assume those are legitimate Preset files; is this true?

All the files have an rwx mode; I changed that:
    -rwxrwxrwx 1 user_name staff 9871 Jan 6 18:12 #01 01 1st Violins - VelXF sus.vsynpreset*

When I clicked on the first file, the violin one, I got two cases:

Vienna Synchron Player Unexpectedly Quit or the color wheel is spinning, and nothing happens.

It's the same with other presets. There is still an issue somewhere.

  • My user preset files have the following permissions: -rw-r--r--

My user presets folder has these permissions: dwr-------@

One other difference: In the options field for User Presets Folder /Users/user_name/Documents/ has a / at the end. I don't know if this matters but it might. I also notice in the options dialog, that if I click the ... button next to the Users Presets Folder field to locate a folder instead of typing it in the field, that causes a spinning ball hang. So I don't do that. I just type it in and that works every time as long as you spell everything exactly right.

By dummy files, do you mean load a VSL preset, modify it and then save it as a user preset? Yes, this should always work.

I don't know anything about the Prime tutorial presets as I don't have them.

  • I just downloaded the Prime presets and they all seem to work fine for me.

I don't know why you would add an executable permission on these files. They are just data files. What are you trying to accomplish with that?

  • I am very familiar with the tricks software companies play when you report a bug. They always say, "When we try it, it always works!"
Since I did not know what the permissions should be, I changed all permissions to rwx; that should not hurt.

    Presets directory permissions are
    drwxr-xr-x@ 39 user_name staff 1248 Jan 7 14:57 Presets/
slightly more than yours dwr-------@, but that should not matter.

The Presets directory is in the correct location
    /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/Vienna Synchron Player/Presets

Everything at this stage is fine.

There is no difference between /Users/user_name/Documents/ and /Users/user_name/Documents with / removed—the same rainbow spinning wheel.

This cannot be entered in the file name /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/Vienna Synchron Player/Presets/#01 01 1st Violins - VelXF sus.vsynpreset to load a single Preset file,
    or /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/Vienna Synchron Player/Presets/
    or /Users/user_name/Documents/VSL/Vienna Synchron Player/Presets
with the "/" after Prests cannot be entered. The error is Please enter a valid folder name:

We are back to where we started from.
I will wait a little while until you fix the bug/bugs.

  • I can’t fix any bugs. I’m just another user like you. If you want someone at VSL to deal with what you perceive as bugs, you might want to contact support@vsl.co.at

  • BTW, why do you keep insisting to put the path specifier in the filename field. The program already knows the path, and it already knows the file extension. So just put in the filename and you should be fine. No path name or file extension is needed.

  • I thought you worked for VSL. It's good you told me otherwise because, by accident, I could have suffocated the wrong guy. I'm just kidding. Thanks for your help. The software is somewhat unfinished and fairly untested. It may even work sporadically, but in most cases, it does not.

Trying to open a Preset without specifying the whole path and skipping the file extension generated this error.

Could not load '#01 01 1st Violins - VelXF sus'.

The spinning rainbow wheel is also there.

  • How are you loading the preset? You shouldn’t have to type anything. Just double click the preset in the browser panel on the right side of the app.

  • The problem was with activating software licenses. It would be nice to see a warning message that the license was not activated.

All the work over the last two weeks was utterly unnecessary.
