  • Synchron solo strings: help needed in Dorico

I have read mostly all the relevant posts here and in Dorico but am still not fully understanding a few things.

    1. It was mentioned that if I put in the correct expression library then the sounds load automatically? They don't. My workflow is as follows For example building a string quartet: I add an 'empty' player in Dorico then choose solo violin. I add vst instrument to the vst instruments panel in this case synchron player. Then I pick synchronised solo strings at which point I am presented with lots of choices i.e. violin basic. basic xfl etc I go to expression map and load synchronised solo strings vn1 and viola. So there is no automatic loading of sounds, pretty sure I am doing this wrong. I get playback fine, but..
    2. Crescendos don't work, even over repeated notes (as opposed to hald notes).

Sorry for nopt knowing more but have moved from Finale to Dorico (which I love) so already have this to contend with! If someone could help with a step-by-step guide as to how I use synchronised solo strings to automatically load the correct sounds that will playback effectively it would be great.

I have also tried creating string quartet from Dorico but it will use their in-built sounds, so I have to load up vsl with same result as above.

    Thanks for any help!

  • Hello jjmus!

I recommend creating a Dorico playback template with our Dorico Wizard. You can find it in Vienna Assistant. With such a playback template, everything (player, preset, expression map) gets loaded and assigned automatically. You can find more details about it here:

Thanks andi, have already done this but still not loading (I have to manually do it) ...but if I choose vsl default from Dorico...play drop down then they load, but they also unload any other instruments I'm using from other vsts. Have asked same question on Dorico forum as I think it may be something I'm doing wrong there.

Got this reply also from Mavros on Dorico forum.......think I now understand

I think you are on the right way but it is probably easiest to use the Dorico Wizard which you can access through the Vienna Assitant. You can create a playback template using this tool specifically for your SyZd Solo Strings which they now to Studio Solo Strings.

So you first create a new project using the string quartet template you find under Chamber category. Next go to the play menu tab in Write mode and choose Playback Template. There you will find the template you saved with the Dorico Wizard. You load it and you will have all your instruments linked to the VSL library with the correct Expression Map.
