  • Pro Tools users: A little herads Up

Hi everybody, I hope you're having as great time, just a little heads up to my fellow Pro Tools users (probably a very small amount, since PT is not very popular nor great for midi writing). With the newest version just released "2024.10.0" there's some changes that may affect the way your templates work, for instance if you are using strictly Instrument Tracks, now you have automatic input monitoring, so just select the track and off to the races, no need to arm it to hear it, however this came at the cost of screwing the "Midi Thru" option already in place, which means that if you use regular Midi Tracks going to,let's say,a multi-timbral plug in/softsynth/sampler or to VEP Instance and have your audio routed thru auxes, routing folders or any other way other than Instrument tracks, you will not get sound unless the midi track is armed to record and this also applies to hardware instruments. So if you have a big template that uses Midi Tracks and different routings is probably safe to stay away from the last PT version. Everything plays properly so is not a playback thing, is just how the Midi Thru option works now and unfortunately on my case I'll probably have the headache of replacing all my midi tracks for instrument tracks and hope I don't run out of tracks on my current template. Typical Avid.

This is not a VSL problem, is definitely a big Avid change as it affects hardware also.

Just a little headup and my best regards

    K.

  • BTW Sorry for the misspells, I wrote this really quick and I can't find a way to edit the post.

  • Maybe I'm misunderstanding the issue, but isn't this just a question of activating this Preference ...?

  • Hello Dietz, thanks for the reply, unfortunately it is not, the way Avid changed it applies only to instrument tracks and not midi tracks, so basically they reversed how things worked before.

That option on preferences use to work with Midi tracks and not with instrument tracks due to the combined nature of an instrument track (midi + aux track) so what they did on the latest update was to completely reverse it and now when you select an instrument track the aux/audio part will activate Input monitoring so you will hear the sound thru that particular track, however when you select a midi track that is pointing to a multi-timbral plugin or a hardware synth etc. coming back thru an Aux track or a Routing folder or any other more specific or complex routing you don't get any sound unless the track is armed to record. (There some complains already on the Avid forums, specially from people using hardware synths)

The one advantage of the the instrument tracks being a self contain midi/audio track is also a problem when using multi-timbral instruments and in the case of using VEP it presents some problems, for example let's say we create a very simple "Strings" Instance and within that instance we have 1 Kontakt plugin:

Kontakt 1 = Strings Long with 2 different libraries playing Sustains, different midi channel, same output.

With the old avid system you could create 2 midi tracks for the longs and 1 Aux for the return (let's say you want them to play together) then you select your midi track and you get sound from the Aux.

With the new version, you can either do it as before but you need to arm-record the midi track you want to hear or you can use instrument tracks without needing the Aux return, however when you want to combine both libraries creating 2 instrument tracks means 2 audio returns of the same source creating phasing and/or double the volume, etc. etc. or If you use a mix of both for example 1 Instrument track for the first library and 1 midi track pointing at the second library/midi channel then again you need to arm-record that second track. With a more complex Instance things can get pretty messy now.

Maybe it seems like having to arm-record a track to listen to it is not a big deal for some, however when is a big template that extra step becomes a bit of a pest, but I think most importantly the difference between having 512 Instrument tracks vs having 1024 Midi tracks can be a problem for people with big templates and hence why maybe the problem is some of us sticking with Pro Tools hehehehe.

I hope this info is a little helpful and again many thanks for taking the time to read the post.

    Best
