  • Random Volume cc7 inputs leading to no sound in Synchron Player and Vienna Imperial Player

    Hi VSL Family,

I e-mailed VSL support with the following issue I am experiencing, however I reach out to the community just incase anyone out there has ever experienced the same problem?

I am running Cubase 12.0.70 and the latest version of Synchron Player on a PC 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KF 3.20 GHz with 64 GB Ram.

Everything has been bullet proof for many months using primarily Duality Strings, Synchron Brass and Woodwinds for a film soundtrack.

Then, as of a few days ago, randomly, various synchron player VST instrument tracks and also the old Vienna imperial player (non synchron) would suddenly and very randomly stop making sound.

I traced the problem to the main volume, cc7 of the instrument in question for no known reason suddenly reducing itself to zero (???)

I ensured there is no cc data coming through that may explain the random main volume reductions and today when recording with the Vienna imperial player, it even recorded the cc change; all of a sudden there is a random Volume cc7 recording at next to zero with no user input.

I reverted back to the previous version of synchron player (you never know) and that didn't do anything, so I reinstalled the latest version.

I also recently purchased the Synchron solo Cello last night and by the end of bar one, the main volume had reduced itself to 0.
The problem also appears to be getting more frequent.

Any thoughts on this? It's driving me nuts.

Many thanks for any feedback / thoughts you can offer on this.
    Kind Regards,
    Lee

  • Do you have any MIDI controllers or control surfaces attached to your computer?

In the past I had also problems with cc7.

I have worked with two solutions, when I couldn't reach or change the source of the problem.

    1. Enter in every instrument in Cubase for cc7 the value that you want. (In Dorico this works, Dorico changes cc7 to value 100 as default).
    2. Change in the Synchron Player in every instrument the cc for volume from cc 7 into for example 17. Unfortunately this is not possible in the Vienna Imperial Player.

  • Hi MMKA,

That is what I thought too.

What was the source of your cc7 issue?

VSL confirmed it is an issue to do with a control surface as Synchron or Imperial do not transmit a cc7 messages. That makes sense.

Therefore, it may be time I upgrade my old battered midi controller keyboard.

  • The source of the cc7 problem was, that Dorico changes by default the value of cc7 to 100.

I don't like that, because VSL uses cc7 to balance the Instruments. By changing cc to cc17 the good balance of the Instruments in the presets was kept.

First I used the first method (entering the right cc7 value in the music), but changing cc7 to cc17 is a little bit easier. And I don't use the Vienna Imperial anymore. My go-to piano is the Synchron Concert D-274 (the Steinway).

  • Good to hear that there are others who do not like this reset for CC7 to 100 in Dorico. Please write to them in the Dorico Forum and ask to at least put an option in the settings, like for default output volume, to be able to deactivate this feature. I have done so several times but no button yet.

I have set CC7 to CC3 in my VE Pro template for all VSL instruments. What also happens from time to time to me is when I switch from an instrument using CC1 and CC11 for dynamics control to a VSL instrument using CC1 or CC2 and velocity that there is still a manually entered CC11 reduction in the control lane which gives an unexpected volume reduction.
