  • Kudos To VSL For Vienna Assistant

I would like to take a moment to praise VSL for their Vienna Assistant software. One top of all the other things they have done, they took the time to create a more customer-friendly way to install, manage, update, and reference their software and libraries. I already take it for granted.

I second that notion. Now with the compressed in-place libraries the "experience" got even better.

  • I fully agree, the App itself and the entire user experience once it is running, downloading, ... is just great 😊!

The only problem is that basically every single time one opens the App it downloads a new update without even asking (by now half a gigabyte), requires to run an installer, a new sign in, ... . Not just that this always takes a lot of time, it creates an incredible amount of web traffic that is simply unnecessary and unfortunate from an environmental point of view.

It seems the entire content aside from the actual libraries (i.e. list of libraries, artwork, ...) is stored within the App itself and whenever there is any change (a new product, a new Expression Map or whatever), this requires a new mandatory update of the entire App. Why can't the App be much leaner and simply load new content at runtime when needed (and then store it locally)? This way everything would be downloaded exactly once and not the entire existing content every single time some small thing changes.

Updates of the app are not frequent, maybe once or twice a month. Content updates whenever it's available

I guess you make my point here 😊. I am not sure how often you install VSL libraries, but for me the Vienna Assistant is not an App that I use on a daily basis. And if it is updated once or twice a month (which is not the case for any of the Apps I use daily) that means for me: basically every time I open the App.

But, my point is that this is just not needed and the App could simply download new/updated content (and store it locally in some database) like any other App that uses regularly updated content - instead of including everything in the App itself and downloading and installing everything over and over again.

For me, it takes less than 20 seconds to update. Hardly a burden.

And the update is for the app itself, not the content.
