Reason being there's plenty of Dorico VE Pro users there who can share their experience. I use them together, but I do not normally use the VSL Wizard.
VE Pro was necessary in Finale because there were only 8 MIDI slots. That's not the case in Dorico, so you may not need it.
The VSL Templates instantiates a separate VST player for each channel. To use VEP, you would need to modify to direct the MIDI there.
As Bill said - Our VSL Expression Maps for Dorico all load the Synchron Player instruments directly into Dorico for you. There is no need for the Vienna Ensemble software. Dorico is much more straightforward in this regard than Finale.
Thanks for replies! Finale do have some real limitations, however of the character that it inspires a lot of work-arounds. For instance, I have a lot of works in Finale in which I use hidden channel and/or patch changes directed through Finales Midi into VEPro and their instances. I guess they will not work in Dorico?

It looks like Dorico has a pretty impressive native instrument positioning and reverb/comvolution reverb application as a part of it. Haven't tried it, but it might be worth exploring.
That said MIR Pro3d is--well, very cool.
I prefer using VE Pro with Dorico even though it isn't strictly necessary. It means the instruments can't be auto-loaded unfortunately, but for me VE Pro provides a more advanced mixing environment than the Dorico mixer does. I still make use of the VSL expression maps as a starting point, in most cases using them directly. If the Dorico mixer had feature parity with the VE Pro one, and there was an easy way to save mixer settings including inserts in Dorico for transferring to another project, I might not need to bother with VE Pro. But I think such features are unlikely to some soon, so I will be using VE Pro for the foreseeable future.
If you don't need this more advanced mixing environment (which is likely the case if you're mostly working with smaller ensembles rather than full orchestra) then it is probably easier to just use the built in template and benefit from the autoloading in VSL for Dorico.

I'm on Dorico on Mac, and use VEP. If I save a Dorico file, or a Playback Template, instruments are automatically loaded into VEP when I reload the file, or apply the PT.
I don't know if this depends on the Preserve and Decouple statuses, but I would believe this is likely.
I find that VEP is very useful, in letting one preserve the same orchestra when switching between Dorico projects. Close Act I, open Act II, and there is no need to reload the samples.
I also think that VEP is lighter than Dorico. Steinberg has not optimized Dorico for the use of VEP, and you can see it in the CPU load. However, I feel that the system reacts much faster if I'm using VEP.

Something that would be nice is if VE Pro supported having "track templates" or "track presets" where you could save a track or something as a preset and recall it and automatically have the VSTi plugin and plugin settings and inserts and sends and output set correctly. Then if you need one more of a particular instrument, you could just create one based on the track preset and get all inserts and sends and everything matching the first one.
If it supported using bank changes / program changes to access such presets, it might even be possible to get Dorico auto-loading to work within a single VE Pro instance. If you had Dorico send the specific bank change / program change associated with the preset (which it does when auto loading is used), it could automatically load the copy of the instrument already tailored to your exact settings.

Oh that's great! I just tried it and it doesn't quite work as I had hoped. The output and send doesn't get mapped if they still exist the same as before:
It would be ideal if it could save the send and output mapping and try to reassign based on that (if the send or output didn't exist obviously that couldn't work).
If VE Pro could be made to load a specific channel set on a specific unused channel by sending a bank and program change to that channel, it would be possible to program an instrument auto loading function in Dorico since this is how Dorico loads individual instruments in things like Halion and NotePerformer. VSL could define a standard set of bank/program changes to load the Synchron/Synchron-ized instruments and then it could be a nice way to use VE Pro with Dorico (probably Sibelius too would work with this I think?). Then the instruments could load inside VE Pro where you have the much more powerful mixer than the one in Dorico, and it would still be easy to use for new users like the built in function.
It could be a very powerful solution for many users, and you've already got most of it developed it seems like.
