  • How to set up a "real" reverb for an orchestra?

    Hello,

    I've got UAD-1 and just want to know, how to make a realistic sounding setting for an orchestra. I guess this depends on instruments grpuß like brass and strings. In my special case I am interested in to get some brass reverb "from behind".

    Any suggestions?

    I think what everyone is saying, in *effect*, is that there is no one way. Even the same settings by the same person will be tuned and more finely tuned with each project.

    There are some questions and answers regarding the recorded demos that discuss matters of reverb and EQ. These may be great starting points for you, but the best results will come from repeated listening and comparative listening to your own project and numerous recordings-- even with the demos made available on this forum.

    Once you have a clear concept of the sound that you want to achieve-- (for example, if you have a favorite orchestral recording that you like best), listen to your own mix to understand what is missing. Also important is to listen to your own project to understand what is good about it.

    If there is anything that you want to hear more of, start by ducking those elements that interfere with it. This might be the volume fader or it might be a particular frequency or frequency range on an EQ. What these settings might be will hinge entirely on your mix. Then, try boosting the level or EQ settings on the intsrument(s) you'd like to hear more of. I have found that reducing levels is the best place to start before adding. All of these mix elements impact greatly on what happens to the sound when bussed and panned inside a reverb.

    Another important element in getting the right sound and understanding how effective your reverbs, etc., is to make sure that your monitoring system is as accurate as possible. Not all speakers and amps are created EQ-ual.

    This is a VERY broad topic, and there are as many different approaches as there are people who do this. There may be endless "wrong ways" to mixing reverb settings, but the good news is that there really is no one single "right way". Everyone who manages to get a great mix will tell you their method is a good one, but no two people get the same result exactly the same way.
