  • Hi!

NKS is still on our radar, but no updates are waiting around the corner.

    Best,
    Andreas

Being an Austrian, even living here in Vienna - only a few kilometers away from your head quarters - doesn't prevent me from being a little bit disappointed in the meantime. Honestly, your products really seem to be outstanding; but as much as I'd be willing to support VSL by buying additional libraries, it must be mentioned here at this point that I think that VSL is heavily underestimating the needs some sample library users might have, especially when it comes to achieving a quick and convenient workflow. You may turn it as you like, but a serious NKS support in conjunction with VST3 plugins is simply a must-have nowadays.

Still I don't understand why any libraries you are giving away for free are natively providing NKS-support right out of the box, while others, even newer "commercial" VSL libraries simply don't. VSL is officially mentioned as NI's "NKS certified partner"; however, I must really point out that your list of NKS-supported products hasn't been growing since more than a whole year. In fact, I feel a little bit fooled, having purchased the "Elite Strings" library long ago, still hoping that someday it would be made fully NKS-supported by VSL. After all, you cannot deny that it was already on your "To-Do" list long ago; and that was even the trigger for me to purchase that library. All those special sales you are offering from time to time are looking very nice at first glance, but in fact they are not bringing any added value to many users, just because of the fact that many of your libraries are still lacking of any related NKS support. Maybe it would be really necessary for VSL to hire some additional staff in order to get this job done finally. Please take a look at your direct competitors; they have at least understood how to read the signs of the times. Just my 2 cents, but as mentioned, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking like that.

  • I fully agree with you assessment. The speed is disappointing .Synchron Strings Pro was next Paul wrote in May 2022 more than a year ago and in the mean time we got again a lot of Big Bang stuff and non of the Synchron products. Maybe the conceived idea is that Synchron users do not use Komplete. Kontrol NKS. I personally have made light guides plus knobs control for all classical instruments except for non tuned percussion I own for my KK S61 keyboard. That helps as most libraries have, plus minus a few notes, on the outside of the range, the same playing range for the instruments and many have CC 1, 11, 2 and 7 for the same purpose, Vibrato is often less standardized. so I programmed two knobs which I use dependent on the library vendor. That I have combined with articulations buttons on an ipad using Metagrid with Art Conductor. So in the mean time I do not really need NKS for those instruments. Just unptiched percussion instruments are far from standardized on a keyboard. so there NKS would save a lot of time.

More than half a year later, may I ask again how long it still may take VSL to release the next "NKS installer" package which was initially scheduled for August?

At least that was Paul's latest communicated forecast, especially related to NKS support for Elite Strings or other String-based libraries that were on the NKS "to-do" list for a long time already.

    Hello,

Sorry that the new NKS presets take way longer than we originally expected. We must redo the installer, add support for MK3 hardware and fix several topics to keep compatible with new Komplete Kontrol updates, which just takes some time.

As I understand the desire, I prepared a NKS custom preset

    • Download "VSL default.zip" from this posts attachment
    • Unzip/Extract the preset "VSL default.nks" into
      • Windows: C:\Users\\Documents\Native Instruments\User Content\Vienna Synchron Player\
      • MacOS: Macintosh HD > User > > Documents > Native Instruments > User Content > Vienna Synchron Player

    To open this custom preset

    • Click on the “Head” Icon in Komplete Kontrol
    • Optionally search for VSL
    • Open the Preset "VSL Default" (Screenshots from Komplete Kontrol 2.9.x and 3x as below)

Now you can open any of our VSL Presets (Elite, Synchron Strings Pro …) – VelXF sus MOD will always work best - and start playing

The preset maps all common controls (Expresssion, VelXF, Timbre, Humanization, ...) as well as CC20 and CC03 which are used for several instruments as Dimension Controller (Duality Strings, Elite Strings, ...)

If you want, you can just save this preset with the instrumented loaded as new custom preset:

    • File -> Save As (This will allow you to find it as described above)

These custom presets now will allow you to:

    • Utilize the Light Guide for all our Synchron Player Instruments
    • Directly control the most common parameters of our instruments from your keyboard

Things that are not supported will be:

    • Displaying the artwork (on NKS keyboard and within Komplete Kontrol Software)
    • Full utilization of the browser inclusive audio previews

Please let me know if this helps or if you run into any problems

All the best, and I really hope to be able to release official NKS factory presets very soon again!

    Gabriel

  • Dear all

I just updated the previous post with regarding the "VSL default" preset.
This preset was tested it with the requested libraries (Elite Strings, Synchron Strings Pro) and hopefully can help until the official releases will be available.

    All the best

    Gabriel

Thanks a lot. I will try this approach today.

  • Thanks a lot, @GabrielG, your NKS template for the Synchron Player works fine inside KK.

Nevertheless, please allow me one final question to this topic:
Before taking that provided NKS template as a serious reference for all of my future DAW projects where VSL Strings libraries are to be involved, do you think there will still be any NKS assignment changes (knob/event to assigned function/feature) planned by VSL to appear in the final NKS installer release? Of course, it wouldn't be good if any projects already based on the currently available template would finaly stop working as expected, just because the "official" NKS installer has finally be allocated in a different way. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    Hello B.Minor,

Thanks for the feedback and great to hear that it works!
I assume there will be one change, as Elite Strings use CC1 for and Synchron Strings Pro use CC4 for Tremolo Control, so the Mapping of the last fader in the first tab will be adjusted to this. Everything else should stay as it is (In Tab 1 and 2) and might be extended in additional tabs.

    Best regards

    Gabriel

  • Hi Gabriel,
