Well, for exemple :

The percussion don't work at all. (Can't even see the directory...)

Then I try strings : I select all files and begin the copy.
This time, it works.
Till problems begin. Look : the 'transfer' window show during the copy : 6... 5... 4.... minutes etc... no problem..
Then it shows : 1022610 minutes. (It's not a joke)
Then the system get crazy : I can't stop the transfer, it runs all time... I have to exit the DVD.
So I have on my hard-drive :
00 String ensemble (all files)
01 Violin ensemble (all files)
02 Viola ensemble : only 01 and 02...
And no Harp...

So I tried Brass & Woodwinds.
Same story...
It begins well, and fails after few minutes.
I get :
06 Flute (all files)
07 Oboe (all files)
10 Trumpet c : only 00, 01, 02, 03.
And no trumpet ensemble...


Then I give up... go quickly to the shop, and give back the drive I've just buy.

Maybe VSL DVDs are too slim, or too light... When I look at them, I see that the border is bevel.

Ah, I don't know, maybe I'm not lucky. Maybe that 'Combo' drive (Philips) is too much cheap too...

It's not the end of the story. (You will not believe it)

This afternoon, I go to the shop, whith the percussion DVD (That one doesn't work at all.), to make a try if they want to see the problem by themself.
I wait fifteen minutes.
The DVD box on the Driver package.
I wait.
The seller comes.
So I go to him
The DVD box fall on the floor...
Oh, no.

No.

Well... if one of them will not work, I'll know why, now...


What luck...

(I have to say that all DVDs I get are clean, no scratch on it, of course...)

Well I appreciate your reaction.

But I have to be sure that it's not a drive problem. I will not contact Best Service before.

I'll buy a new on, probably Plextor.

Another Combo, I know, but I get 3 IDE Port whit a combo (so then 3 Hard Drive on ne mother board).
And Plextor seems to be famous. Specially for pro CD-Audio burning (Red Book for Master Glass).

The French distributor (Arbiter France) had to change it twice and it doesn't work... (it's a new model). A bit surrealist.

I think this is a Windows problem... It did this strange 1234128635471 minutes problem when I installed my DVDs too. But this is only a display problem. The copy worked fine. It took about 15 minutes per DVD to be copied on the hard drive.

just a little excurse:
the mac goes through all files before copying them (counting ... xxx files with yyy MB), looks if there is sufficient room on the destination-device, and then starts to copy
windows starts to copy instantly and gets an estimation, how long the whole process will take - but it counts only objects, not the content of folders
so e.g. you have 3 folders containing each 10 files it will be handed like 13 objects - after having copied the first file, a oversimplified calculation takes place: 1 object 1 minute, 13 objects 13 minutes. this works until the content of the first folder is copied, then it goes to the second and (surprise, surprise) it contains another 10 objects.
now a recalculation takes place - as wrong as the one before - showing up unrealistic eg. 120,000 seconds. but you will notice the number decreasing in steps greater as a second - so any estimation about remaining time becomes completely useless if you're copying a large structure of folders, because every calculation has to be wrong using such a method.

just don't understand why this is still not improved somehow, just another senseless example for pseudo-optimization ....

i also had troubles in a first run with harp and trumpet, but as i mentioned before: my DVD-drive is not brand-new, heavily used and i'm smoking in this room - and that's what electrostatic laser-diodes are just waiting for [;)]

any new drive *should* give you a trouble-free access, but obviously this isn't the case - the specification for DVDs are very strict (means VSL-disk are not too thin, too heavy, whatever) so we will set up some statistic in which drives they are poorly readable - please feedback everybody

again i'd like to mention, double-layer DVDs do not reflect laserlight as good as single-layer - so the drive needs to read them more precisely.
anyhow - we'll keep track on that problem, because we do not enjoy seeing our users loosing their mind on such a boring task

I have installed VSL successfully from both Pioneer SCSI, LG IDE and what-not drives. 4 different drives - no problems.

reassuring to hear that, simon, we put them on a list of *VSL-prooven drives*[;)]
besides that i'd like to mention: we carried out a spot check on a lot (10?) different DVD-drives, and only mine failed in a first run
hopefully this issue isn't going to continue ...

Speaking of DVD load times!
I have load times of around an hour per DVD, or more. using an Asus DVD.
I've just loaded the timpani - its about 40 min to load!
So whats going on? is it the Asus DVD, something in the setup or is the
VSL compressed ?
Any hints are appreciated

I hope your DVD problem has been taken care of by now. My Windows 98 also displayed '1289.099 minutes left'.

The workaround I found for that goes like this:

as soon as you see this message (it usually came after the first half of the disc was copied), terminate the copying process and simply copy the remaining gig files by hand.

Now my LG drive is so cheap that I can't even read the directory. So I'll try to find a new one (and a good one) tomorrow.

(Today I've spend all my time to find a Master Keyboard. Fatar is out for me. Rest Doepfer or Oberheim...Hard to get in France. So I'll have to buy a Roland RS9...)

I had problems with my NEC DV-5700b so I did the same i.e. drag the instrument folders to my giga drive one at a time. I know it's not related to a HD and DVD on the same IDE channel - for my setup anyway. The extra transfer time helps build suspense, anticipation and character. [[;)]]

Problem solved !


I bought a new drive : LITEON DVD 16X 24X, Bulk version (45 Euro)

A bit slow, but it works...

With all DVDs, even the percussion DVD which falls on the floor ! (just a bit striped)

It seems that Liteon is the manufacturer for many trade mark (Nec, Sony, etc...)

I just have to proceed step by step, files by files, like csduke said. No more ‘12342345645762412 (etc...)’ problems.

Just an indication : around 30 minutes per DVDs. (I think my drive runs slowly, it’s not warm, even after one houre non-stop...)


Conclusion : My problem really was a drive problem.

So everything is fine.

I think that planing a Hard Disk Edition is... a good idea.

How many GB for the Pro Edition ?

Maybe more than 25 DVDs, I suppose...

And I don’t speak about the Synphonic Cube... 250GB... Jesus !

Well for a professional using, I think a Hard Disk is preferable.

Not to use it.

But for easy ‘safe copy’ on another HD first, and then transferts on each Giga or EXS stations, with a HD to HD rate of flow... especially with USB 2 or Firwire (Firewire 800 now...).

That’s the way I see it...
