  • Duality Strings - New Preset Feature Request - "VelXF sus + Velocity Control"

    Hello,

I've really been enjoying Duality Strings. Normally I use the "VelXF sus - MOD" presets for most libraries, or my own presets based on those with a few modifications, but I've been trying out the new "VelXF + Velocity Control" presets in Duality Strings.

Most libraries that I work with personally use velocity for the dynamic for the shorts and for controlling the attack on the longs, so I love having this ability with the longs in Duality via the "VelXF + Velocity Control" preset. The problem is what this preset does to the shorts - it uses the modwheel for the dynamic for the shorts so it behaves like the "VelXF - MOD" instead of the "VelXF sus - MOD". As a secondary issue, I do not personally like controlling the trill interval and direction of runs with velocity and prefer the keyswitch control method as in "VelXF sus - MOD". In my case I use both Dorico and Cubase and in Dorico it is a little strange to use the velocity to control trill intervals when the trill is notated, while in Cubase it doesn't matter so much. There is also the possibility of screwing up when making velocity edits to a region and accidentally changing trill intervals or run directions.

What I would really like to see is a official preset that is similar to "VelXF sus - MOD" in using velocity for dynamic for shorts, but also using it to control attack for the longs, like "VelXF + Velocity Control". The result would be something like "VelXF sus + Velocity Control". I believe it is not just me, and other people who are fans of the "VelXF sus - MOD" approach would like to see this type of option, so I hope VSL may consider adding it. The control over trill interval and run direction is more of a personal preference (I personally prefer not using Velocity Control for this) and so I can understand if others really like that approach that VSL might want to keep it in a potential "VelXF sus + Velocity Control" preset.

I've been able to make these presets myself for now, but normally when there are library updates, I will go through and delete my user presets and recreate them so that I don't miss out on any enhancements that are made in the latest version. In this case there are just a lot of changes to make in this hybrid preset and it took me some time. If there was an official "VelXF sus + Velocity Control" then there would be few if any changes I would need to make manually, and it would mean less work if and when the library is updated. I also think that there are many other composers like me who like having velocity affect the attack for long notes but don't want to lose the velocity control for dynamic on the short notes.

    Thanks!
