    SUMMRAY:

    • I (beginner) want to buy computer (Windows) 4 Boesendorfer Imperal + Synchron Series etc.
    • What are YOU using (CPU, RAM, SSD, Bus)?
    • Its a hobby, but also passion ...

    DETAILS:

    Actually:

    • Notebook: 64Bit, 11th Gen i7@2.80GHz (4 cores), 16 GB RAM, 500 GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro(22H2)
    • 3 x 1920x1200 24" Monitors on the docking station
    • CUBASE Elements 12
    • Audio-Interface: Babyface Pro via ASIO; Midi-Loop for keyboard + sound-module, output to headphones & speakers(XLR)

    Playing and evaluating is fine, but - as far as I could see in the forums - to week for more.

    Future:

    • VSL Boesendorfer Imperal Piano Standard Library (130 GB)
    • First: Synchron Prime Edition - Starter Edition 
    • Then:
      • SYNCHRON STRINGS Pro (123 GB)
      • SYNCHRON WOODWINDS -Standard (110 GB)
      • SYNCHRON-ized Dimension Brass I (16 GB)
      • SYNCHRON PERCUSSION I (170 GB)
    • etc.
    • + Some Products from Native Intruments

    Target:

    • Composing a Mixture of classic intruments + some electronic sounds, mostly 16 tracks (sometimes up to 32), using oly a few effects.
    • Instruments and DAW (Cubase) running on one computer.

    Question:

    • I have to buy (or to build) a new Windows*-Computer for this; preferably ONE computer - no slaves
    • I need AT LEAST an i7 with 4 cores, AT least 32GB RAM, AT LEAST 2 TB build-in SSD; right?
    • Is this right, completely stupid, somewhere in the middle or did I overlook something?
    • I know, that I have to invest a lot of money (step by step) and whould like to go in the right direction in the beginning.

    Hi Dr.Mavro, 

    Please firstly tell us your budget. However one thing caught my attention. The Baby Face Pro via Asio? The RME products are world famous not only for their hardware but also for their Drivers. They're the very best! So please download the latest Baby Face Pro drivers and install them and use those instead of Asio.

    ASIO: Sorry for not expressing myself correctly: Of course I use the current RME drivers, which are recognized e.g. by Cubase as "ASIO Fireface USB"" - works perfectly.

    Budget: I reckon with min. 1kEuro, probably 3-4kEuro - at much more I would have to think about it. I just have no experience here ...

    Hallo Dr.Mavro,

    Just a quick response on your new DAW questions. CPU: 4 cores is really too small. You need at least 8 cores and take the K version. With those you can crank up the speed (GHz). CPU speed is important for DAW usage. Up to 3.5 - 4 GHz should be possible. Ram memory under 64 GB works but more Ram will make your computer better and run more smoothly. Motherboard: I prefer Asus. They're very stable and you don't need a fancy expensive "Gaming board". There's absolutely no need to spent more than $200 for a decent Mobo. GPU: It's kind of well known that NVDIA graphic cards give poor results with DAW's. Latency trouble with stutter, crackels. Get a Amd Radion card and your bad latency days are over! And the same as with the motherboard a simple budget card will do the job! What's more? Oh yeah. SSD's are getting real cheap. Use a separate Ssd for Windows and programs (your sequencer and others) and a couple of Ssd's for the Sample libraries. Take reasonably fast Ssd's. Again no need to get the top of the line. Just the average reading speed ones will do fine. Last part I think mentioning is the PSU. 850 watts is more than sufficient. Oh and get a Fractal Design computer case with lots of cooling fans. And a big but quite Cooling tower for your CPU. Good luck!

    Regarding graphics: Currently I'm still working with a Thinkpad i7 with a docking station via USB-C with 3 Eizo monitors at 1920x1200 each (Cubase + VSL base/free products + RME Babyface Pro via USB and quite a few tools) - no problems. This operation does not seem to have high demands on the graphics; right?

    P.S.: There are people who work with 5 x 4 TB SSDs for the samples. That seems to be a lot to me ...

    One can never have enough sample storage! :-)

    The EVO Series (SATA III) drives are perfect for that.
