  • New Desktop Setup (Please HELP)

    Hello VSL Community,

Back in 2014 I made a similar post and your advice was INCREDIBLY valuable, I really trust your advice on this one.

My current laptop is splitting in half, time to get a new machine.

What are the current specs in terms of RAM, CPU, SSD and graphic card for those running the most outrageous templates with video as well - for film scoring and so on?

Please let me know so that I can start asking for quotes.

    Thank you in advance

    Francesco

    Hi Cyril,

Most likely a PC.... I am interested in the specs first and then I am gonna compare the quotes on both systems.

    Many thanks

sorry I cannot help you on PC, I am a Macmaniac 😊

I use a MacBook Pro with 64 GB and 4TB, and that is fine for paying large orchestra.

  • Thanks Cyril, I'll have a look on the Apple store to see if that's something I can afford.

    All the best

  • A good place to look is at the "Refurb" on the Apple site

You can get good opportunity at a cheaper price

I have use it a lot

  • You're right I should look into the refurbished ones too.

    Many thanks

  • Hi everyone,

Just a quick update to say that I managed to get a reasonable MacBook Pro and I am setting it up.

It'll be interesting to see if Cubase holds up, I always hear mixed feedback from those who use Cubase on Mac and I notice (for a start) that Cubase doesn't really go full-screen on OS X, something that has been reported on Steinberg Forums since at least 2018 and apparently hasn't been addressed yet.

Maybe I'll switch to Logic, maybe I won't, but either way I need to be able to run Cubase smoothly enough 'cause I have 8 years worth of work in the form of .cpr including stuff that I have done for clients and I intend to pick up where I left if a client gets in touch even after a couple of years asking for edits/stems.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Hey Francesco,

I'm about to upgrade computers myself, been Cubase + VSL + NI Komplete on Windows for a while now, but I'm Mac savvy and have been back and forth over the years. How are you liking the switch to Mac now that it's been a few months?

    Hi Tyler, thanks for asking.

It's okay: to be honest with you I am more than happy. Apart from the annoying thing that Cubase doesn't really go full-screen as I said before the overall performance is good. Core audio is good and works well with Cubase... I can't complain really...

The OS switch was shocking because many of my old templates didn't load up correctly on Mac (even though it's the same DAW) and for each company I had to find different workarounds (I had to create support tickets with each different company). All VSL plug-ins worked almost straight away apart from some Vienna Suite IR locations that had to be set up manually and the few things that still require Rosetta in order to work... minor stuff really. Some of the 3rd party plug-ins were a bit harder to fix and there's an old 3rd party piano (which is a VST-2) that still doesn't work well but there's no reason why (if I ever open up one of those project) I wouldn't just replace it altogether with VSL Bösendorfer Imperial which is a billion times better.

The first 1-2 weeks were hard but it's worth it overall.

    Hope it helps
