Mixing VI and Synchron Libraries

Hi all,

I'm afraid I'm rather out of the loop on this - I finished a long recording project in 2018 and haven't done much sample library work since. As a result, I'm used to and happy with using VI libraries with MIR, and have not had call to use any Synchron products yet.

Then the exotic winds caught my eye, and I'm thinking of picking them up. But I like the sound of the VI instruments in the Teldex MIR environment, that's what I'm used to and I think it works well for my music. So my question is how well Synchron instruments mesh with that. Would I be better off using the exotic wind Synchron instrument as it is, with its natural ambience, and having the rest of the orchestra in the Teldex? Or would I be better using only the closest mic position on the Synchron instrument and running it through MIR, so it's sitting in the Teldex alongside the others?

I'm using Synchron Strings Pro with new MIR but have only The Sage Gateshead room pack. Even so, I'd bet that you'll have no problems at all running Close or Mid or even Main Synchron mics into new MIR Teldex.

I've come to regard Synchron Stage A's acoustics as the most "elegantly polite and congenial" of any major scoring stage in the world, if I can put it that way. My MIR Gateshead room pack shows that the acoustics of The Sage's Hall One, having been very carefully designed using the latest in acoustics knowledge and techniques, are also very polite, pretty and unobtrusive. And yet even feeding MIR Gateshead with Synchron's Main mics doesn't interfere or detract from the Gateshead sound, as far as I can tell. The only constraint I observe is that any panning or recorded directionality on a Synchron mic should first be straightened out before feeding to MIR.

If I recall, the Teldex sound has quite a rich, distinctive character. I don't imagine any of the Standard Library Synchron mics would intrude even noticeably, let alone upset the Teldex character. But of course, like you, I'd be very interested to hear from owners of new MIR Teldex who've tried it with Sychron instruments.

I was a big fan of the VI series for many years. When VSL came out with the first Synchron String Libraries, I was a bit disappointed. In the meantime, however, that has changed. The SYNCHRON libraries come with different microphones. At the same time, VSL offers a ton of presets that give you different combinations of microphones, some with additional effects. But then there is also the preset "Default", with which you get the untreated microphone signals. I actually only use this setting because I love the natural sound and I also like more to mix myself, than to use presets.. With this preset "default" you get very neutral and real sounds. With close-recorded instruments, this gives you a similar sound from the combination of MID and CLOSE mic as you get with the VI instruments.  
You certainly won't go wrong if you buy the exotic Winds. Only: you might get addicted and want more libraries 😉

Your desired wind instrument from the exotic library will be great to integrate, however you want it - just like Macker already said.
