Just installing it.  Congrats to the whole VSL team for having produced all orchestral sections for Synchron in just over a year, and that too during the pandemic!  Given VSL quality and attention to detail, that is quite an achievement!  I’m glad you made the call to release Synchron Woodwinds now and not wait a few more weeks/months for the 2nd solo instruments to be ready.  And the vouchers are a very nice bonus.

If I can be greedy, my Synchron cup would be complete if you released Synchron harps, followed by con sordino expansions…

Yes, thank you VSL for releasing the library now, even without the 2nd solo instruments. This is a great Christmas gift.

    Hi everybody,

I'm afraid we never talk about unreleased products. Lessons learned 😊.

The BBO Woodwinds have been integrated with all velocity layers, we have just slightly adapted the preset structure to allign it with the Synchron logic.

    Hi Paul,
I can't find anywhere info regarding the amount of recorder velocity layers for Synchron Woodwinds, why it's not advertised?

  • Hi lupine,

With our Synchron Series, we’ve established a new approach in terms of velocity layers, which is also supported by our timbre shift technology that allows gradual access to so many additional nuances of each velocity layer.
Any musical coloring between traditional layers is possible, by taking advantage of new technologies that grow as we improve our software and recording approaches over time.

    Paul

    Hi Paul,
I don't understand: how many velocity layers have been recorded for Synchron Woodwinds?
And what timbre adjust does? It's an artificial filtering/eq?

    Hi Gabriele,

We have introduced our Timbre Adjust with Synchron Brass, and it works very well with all of our libraries.
From that moment on, our perspective on velocity layers as a "benchmark" for the quality of sampled instruments changed a bit. That's why we're not advertising this number anymore.

    Paul

That makes a lot of sense.  In light of that...is there anything we can do to automatically tie together say velocity xf with the timbre adjust so that we can just program one curve that tends to do the right thing regarding both level and timbre?

  • Paul, Ben, and VSL Team:

You nailed it.  The fast legatos are crisp and clean (super important for WW), the timbre control + other controls give such flexibility in controlling dynamics, the crossfades are MUCH improved over the VI versions, the vibrato options are very well designed, and...well, yeah, it's great!  Fantastic workhorse library.  Can't wait for the second solo instrument releases!  (I'm glad you're taking your time with those - better to do it well later than do a rushed job earlier, in my humble opinion).

I'm curious: were the fast legato patches in this library recorded and programmed in a similar way to the Synchron Strings Pro agile patches?  I understand if you can't answer due to proprietary whatever, but...whatever you're doing, it's working!

Yes, just set the CC to the same controller, go to the Control tab and tweak the curves (if you don't want an 1:1 relation).

Thanks, great to hear you love the library!
I don't know the exact details of how it was achieved, but yes, the fast legato patches behave in a similar way like the Agile patches.

excellent thanks.  I didn't think of using the control tab to tweak the ratios between XF and timbre...very very cool!

  • Just watched a review and run through of the Syncron Woodwinds and it looks and sounds great. Highly recommended.

  • Hi,

I there a deadline for the offer of vouchers? End of this year, end of the holidays?

    Hi Paolo,

    No deadline for vouchers 😊.

  • Been able to try Synchron Woodwinds for the first time this week. Took a bit of time to implement it on my template, but it was worth the wait.

Coming from the previous VI libraries, the ensemble patches sound like a great improvement.

That said, I cannot tell the same about the solo instruments so far. I dare to say that, in terms of ease of expression and playability, the old VI solo woodwinds are still better with legato articulation. Please take this with a grain of salt, and I can currently sound too much biased on my judgement due to the amount of experience with the VI, that unfortunately I couldn't replicate yet with Synchron solo woodwinds.

Beside the transition moments where it seems there's at least two instruments playing at the same time, the transition itself sounds a bit harsh.

It's still a great library, and I will definitely use it a lot, and I'm sure I'll learn to use it properly, specially when longer notes are required, but for now I guess I'll keep using the VI alternative whenever  something with a bit more movement is in order.

About the Synchron Player, could I suggest, if possible, that the keyboard performance of legato notes could be similar to how it is with the Vienna Instruments Pro - I mean the possibility of note recall whenever it's necessary to play a very short transition note while sustaining another note?

    Thank you for your time

  • Hello Guin,

    Thanks for your feedback!

Of course our goal with Synchron Woodwinds was to capture the instruments just the way we are recording them in a scoring session, and the Synchron Stage itself in combination with the microphone placement plays in important role in creating "that sound".

We found that having both options, the "super-close" mics of the SYNCHRON-ized version and the typical, broader "scoring sound", offers a great balance and choice.

It also took me a while to appreciate the sound of those new woodwinds, so I understand where you're coming from. Having used the VI and SYNCHRON-ized Woodwinds for such a long time, you have gotten used to that specific sound.

Regarding the Synchron Player Legato: I'm afraid the internal logic won't allow to play these "auto-trills" when you hold down one note and then trigger another.

    Best,
    Paul

Paul, I wish this feature will be added or something similar to Synchron Player. It’s crucial to play short trills for woodwinds in most of my composition, the current trills are a bit slow and unable to achieve “single trill” type of sound. Anyhow, I love Synchron Woodwinds, the more I use, the more I love!

  • Hi,

Glad you like the Synchron Woodwinds.

This is not the question of adding a feature... I have been told that it is technically impossible.

You could use time-stretching, as an alternative.

    Best,
    Paul
