  • VEPro 7 and Ardour

I have Ardour 6.9 and VE PRo Server (both in Win10) working well together but it only utilizes 1 MIDI port (thus only 16 MIDI channels). How does one go about routing specific MIDI tracks to the extra virtual MIDI ports that the VE Pro plugin provides in connecting to the VE Pro instance?

Is there something that the DAW needs to implement to get access to the extra MIDI Ports and to route to them?

I started a thread on the ardour forum too and have been givien some suggestions but I still haven't had success. Thought I'd ask here in case there's something I'm missing. Even a screenshot of how it's done in Cubase might help me understand better.

  • I'm guessing that Ardour only supports VST2, which is limited to 16 channels per port. You should be able to create a second instance in VEP (or 3rd, 4th, etc), and open additional ports in Ardour .

Does loading a new instance have any pronounced resource consequences than doing it over virtual MIDI?

Ardour does support VST3 (see below). Any screenshot of it being routed to those extra ports in Cubase I think would still be helpful if anyone has one.

    • Ardour loads AU, VST2, VST3, and LV2 format plugins. Choose the format that works best for each plugin, and hide the ones you don't use (but might be used in some existing sessions).

  • Hi,

I am not familiar with Ardour, but I have heard of hosts that implemented some features of VST3, but not the essential one for heavy-lifting  MIDI work, which is multiple MIDI ports.

I'd suggest to verify this with my colleagues at Ardour.

    Best,
