    Man... I'm realizing just how much setup there is to get an orchestra "at the ready". Template setup is such a huge part of this process, especially if you just want to load up an orchestra and get to the writing part.

    It seems that for customers who go "all in" -- let's say with VI Pro, a full library (Symphonic Cube), VEP7,  and MIR  -- it seems there would be some pre set VEP7 templates for a standard orchestra using MIR with standard instrument placements?

    Perhaps it's too much to ask as there are too many variables (which library? which samples? which room?) but man... my brain is melting and I just want to get to writing some music haha.  It seems there should be a "lowest common denominator" generic full setup template out there to jettison from...

    I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining... I'm just a little frustrated after spending so many days and hours on this not making music.  

    I'm quite familiar with the technology on the DAW end (I've been a full time professional composer on Logic since the Emagic days) but I'll admit I'm new to VEP and MIR.  My master/slave setup is working nicely.  Now it's just the template that's slowing me down.

    So I might be missing something, which is why I'm here asking.  I also might not be missing something, and there is no "quick and dirty" way for a full orchestra.  Nose? Meet grindstone.

    In my humble view, there isn'a standard setup that's good for everyone. Maybe it will work for the more basic libraries, like the SE version. When expanding to the full version, everybody has a different way of working, and the "standard" way will not fit.

    As an example: there are now templates supplied by VSL for Dorico and the Synchron libraries. They make use of the CC2 control for dynamics. Many of us prefer to work with CC1, and end up customizing this part of the template. Other prefer to have the libraries in VEP, and have to remake the template to work with that.

    I don't know if things can be made easier, but I'm sure you will end up doing your own customizations, in the end.

    Yeah, that makes sense.  I jumped in without doing a more “basic” sample set first.  I’m coming from either orchestrating for real players or from just “winging” it without VEP.  I’ve always used to use the EXS-24 versions of VSL from back in the day… (even using the crazy round robin stuff in earlier versions of Logic) it was certainly not as good as what we have available to us now, but it was strangely easier to set up, since I did it all in logic. (I’m an Environment page junkie.)  It was so rare I’d need a full orchestra for the type of work I typically do, that my old stuff worked just fine… well, until it didn’t, and now I’m upping my game.  (Or at least attempting)

    Anyhoo, I’ll stop my complaining and keep cranking.

     

    Maybe I’ll set up something using Epic Orchestra first, and then take it from there.  I’m more used to writing for single instruments (like you would for real instruments) and not ensemble patches, but I gotta start somewhere I suppose.

    My hint is to plan everything in advance. Starting with the VEP instances, the Midi channels corresponding to the various instruments, a schema for the articulations and the keyswitches and controls you will use for all the libraries.

    Start easy: first, the most basic instruments, and the most essential articulations. Expand from that at a later date, when you need them. This should make everything easier.

    The vsl Website has many mock-ups available some of which also provide midi files, cubase files, and vepro project files. It’s something to get started with. They are not usually based on a generic template, but you can at least load one up and see how they did it. There are many effective ways to work with Vsl libraries. I rather reccomend you play around with those snd work with vsl libraries in an adhoc fashion to discover the workflow that works well for you, then turn it into templates But you can certainly load up, for example, the ET score mock-up from Vsl’s site, and just write your own music to it, ready to go

    Dewdman42 - Dude, man.  If you happen to know off the top of your head where those files reside on this gargantuan website, that would be great.  My initial searches (MyDownloads, Music, Academy, Music, Manuals etc) have laid big goose eggs.

    At the top menu of the website there is a linked called "Music"

    That's where you can generally download a lot of mockup demos as MP3.  Some of them also have "tutorials", but you're right, right now I can't see any way to just list all the ones that have tutorials, you probably have to hunt and peck a little bit.  Open up the one for John Williams, Adventures on Earth, at the top of the window you'll see some links, one of which will download Cubase, midi file and vePro files.  I was able to reuse that midi file in both DP and LogicPro without much issue also, for example.  And of course any saved Vepro files will be usable with any DAW.  

    Most of these tutorials are using a lot of Cube, I ended up buying extra instruments and eventually pretty much all of Cube and all of MIRPro rooms, heheheh because I wanted to hear the whole mockup of ET.  Well done sales job VSL!  

    But anyway,... There might be a way to limit the list to only those that have tutorials, but I don't know how to do it, you just have to hunt and peck around and find a few where they provided the DAW files to recreate the mockup..not many of them have it..but some do.

    a lot of those demo projects use Vienna Suite Pro FX plugins too I will add.  You just have to guesstimate what they are doing, its probably a bit of EQ and compression as I recall.  Unfortunately those demo projects don't open in VePro7 with the FX intact, even though VePro7 now has most of those FX built into it.  But anyway, you can fine tune that kind of stuff yourself...

    Getting my template sorted.  It's not as bad as originally seemed.  I mean, sure it's taking DAYS but I'm getting in the zone here haha.
