  • Synchron PIano - Steinway D - Logic Pro Killing Voices

    I have installed both the standalone player and the AU component on my computer.  Here are my specs:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3950x - 16 Core

    Memory: 64 GB

    Working of an HDD 7200 RPM

    When I load a present, say Ambience, the piano works almost perfectly, except for the fact that when I really get going, the program kills the voices.  I see them drop from something like 250 to 70.  I can also see using the CPU monitor that I am not getting close to maxing things out.  I have the following settings on the plug-in: 

    Default Pre-load Size: 32768

    Streaming Threads: 8

    Loading Threads: 8.

    I have also increased the Max Number of Voices per Key and per Mic to the most I can.  Any ideas?

    Also a few other questions:

    1) Is the library supposed to take several minutes to load?  Any way to speed that up?

    2)  When you change the settings in the standalone player (i.e., pre-load size), does that affect the AU component settings in Logic?

    I'm pretty sure your HDD can't catch up with streaming the samples.

    We highly recommend to install the Synchron Pianos on SSDs - this will also decrease loading times (less then 10 second on my system after a fresh reboot).

    Btw, you can move the samples from the HDD to an SSD, so a re-download is not necassary.

  • Would changing the default Pre-Load size and number of threads help?  Also what do you mean by "streaming"?  I thought the samples were loaded into RAM memory, of which I have 64 GB.


  • Well, depending on the piano and mic-count you would have to load 25-250GB into RAM, and with an HDD it will take quite some time...
    Therefore we load only a small portion of the samples into RAM, and the rest will be streamed from disk.

    Changing the Preload time will help with drop-outs, but it will further increase loading times.

  • Bobbyz123, Ben is right of course - SSD is pretty much a must for high sample-count libraries, including VSL's seriously big piano libraries. I'm amazed you're actually getting at least some sort of practical use of piano with just a conventional HDD (but your great Ryzen probably accounts for that).

    I reckon an SSD rated for at least 800 MB/s or so sequential read speed would allow your PC to deliver way more of its fine potential when playing a VSL piano.


  • I think I found a solution that works for me.  I have split each mic into individual software tracks in Logic, and I maxed out the threads from 8 to 16.  That seems to have done the trick (for the most part).


  • Good scheme! Seems to open the door to good, fast multithreading when Logic is in Live mode. (I saw the suggestion in that big thread on piano dropouts, but good to know how well it works.)
