Special edition in Dorico

Hi

I use special edition in Dorico and would like to have a crescendo/decrescendo on a long note (violin). I can see the CC2 fader in the perform tab of the synchron player go up and down, but there is no audible result. How can I fix this?

Hello Daniel!

Could it be that you have turned Vel XF off? Please make sure that it is turned on. The power button next to the fader should be blue when it's turned on.

A new problem occurs: at the end of the decrescendo there is an additional sound:

If you use our Dorico playback templates for the SYNCHRON-ized Special Editions, VelXF is turned on by default.

The additional sound at the end of your example is a release sample. If your note would be one (or more) second shorter, it would probably fit. If it would be one second longer, it wouldn't be triggered anymore. So I would change the playback note length on the Dorico Play page. Such occurances shouldn't happen too often, unless you try to trigger them on purpose.

Hmm. VelXF was turned on by default from the very first version of the "VSL for Dorico" installer on. Can you send me the exact name of the playback template that you have applied? For which instrument is VelXF turned off in Synchron Player after applying the playback template?

I downloaded the "VSL-for-Dorico-macOS-v32.pkg", installed it, selected "VSL SYzd Special Edition Vol 1" in Dorico as Playback Template, created a new file with a string section. In all isntruments (violin 1, violin 2, viola, violoncello and double bass) VelXF is turned off by default.

Maybe the order of your steps is wrong. It should be.
1. Create a new file (or load an old one).
2. Apply the playback template.

That's it. All Synchron Players get loaded with the correct instruments and VelXF enabled. There's no need to load the presets inside Synchron Player.

If you load a SYNCHRON-ized Special Edition preset in Synchron Player, VelXF is turned off by default.

I have to apologise. You are of course correct. I mixed something up. The presets get loaded with VelXF turned off by default. That has been done because of performance reasons. Big orchestral projects may not play back without problems on some computers when Vel XF is turned on for all instruments. I personally would keep it turned off for most of the time and just turn it on for notes with crescendo or diminuendo. More information can be found here:

I was surprised to see in the Steinberg YouTube the the template loads individual player instances, rather than using VE. I'm curious why you did it that way.

Hello Bill!

That has been done for two reasons.

1.) Not all users have Vienna Ensemble installed. Users who don't have Vienna Ensemble installed might think that it is not working correctly.

2.) With Vienna Ensemble we would have to build templates that include various instruments that might not be included in particular projects. This way the loading time and the used RAM would be higher than necessary.
