  • Problems with Steinway D274

    Hi,

    First time post.  I am running 274D on an 2017 HP Sceptre, 8th gen, 1.8G, 8550u, 16GB RAM connected via thunderbolt to a Samsung T7 external SDD.  SDD was reformatted to NTFS.  The laptop is connected to a focusrite 8i6 audio interface.  I can play the piano with no issues for about 20-30 minutes, after which the notes will begin to drop out and I only hear the attack portion of the notes without any sustain (sort of like staccato, but it cuts off even more quickly).  If I continue playing, the windows device manager appears on screen and nothing works.  The SSD gets very hot to the touch.  If I wait a few minutes, I can play again shortly before the cycle begins again.  I've tried upping the preload sample to 16K, but to no avail.  Is the problem my laptop or the Sansung T7 SSD?  Another member on piano world graciously share that he is using a Samsung T7 on his apple laptop with no issues.  Any solutions or am I out of luck?  The 14 day refund policy is coming up in a couple of days.

    Thanks for reporting, I am also following the thread on the Pianoworld Forum. 

    This sounds like hardware troubles to me, and these 2 cases are the only ones we know of so far. Could it be the connection?

    Do you have a chance to check with a different kind of drive or connection?

    Unfortunately we don't have a T7 here to test...

    It sounds to me like your SSD is overheating and throttles down to prevent damage (>70 degree Celcius).
    If you write lots of data, this is nothing unusual after some time, but normally this should not happen when only reading data.
    Reasons for overheating:
    - defective SSD
    - old firmware (try installing the Samsung Magician app and see if you can update the firmware)
    - internal cooling pad is not installed correctly
    - SSD case can not evaporate heat because it is in an envelope / blocked

    Please try updating the firmware and see if nothing blocks the SSD / remove any envelopes/covers. If this des not help, your SSD could be defective.

  • I had an interesting issue last night where just one of the mics would give me this problem. I had the piano player running all day but didn’t play it all the time.
    I started noticing cracks and the cpu symbol flashing red after playing for a while and then went into the mix and noticed it was only the “main” mic that was doing this. I could play with all other mics at the same time but not with the main singled out. It was very strange and the library is all in my Samsung T7 (without touch). Prior before noticed I had also been switching between the D-274 and the Bösendorfer back and forth several times and playing around with a lot of the settings

    A simple restart of the piano player solved it :)

    But I have had no overheating with my T7 and it’s not particularly warm either even after long time playing.

    I have a Mac Mini 2018 and the T7 1tb drive connected with usb-c > usb-c.

    All works really well and I understand now that my wallet is going to be thinner after trying the demos... :)


  • I get that red flashing as well. It only affects one mic pair.

    I've also had the problem where the disk would stop streaming, although restarting Synchron Pianos fixed it. I use a MacBook Pro and a Samsung T5.

    Something similar used to happen with my Windows laptop, but I'm almost certain the problem there was with my hardware.


  • I’d like to know how often the red cpu flashing occurs and if it reoccurs after restarting and playing a while? Also, when this happens, is it in the mix tab that you can locate the mics that are the source of the problem? 9this is addressed to both John and Bernard).

    this has only happened once so it’s not a common issue for me. But I believe that I could see the green volume bars that you see next mic vertical slider was cut whenever the audio was cut on that particular mic so it was easy to see where the problem was. 

    Once I restarted the Synchron piano player the problem went away.
