  • Help With Dorico and VSL Jazz Drums

I'm trying to get Dorico to work with VSL Jazz Drums. I'm using the Jazz Drum XMap.

    1. In VI Pro, should I be using the Jazz Drums JD-GM preset?

    2. In Dorico, should I use the Jazz Drum XMap and the General MIDI Percussion Map?

When I use this combination, MIDI is received by the VIP Instrument and the X-axis switching based on Speed works but the C1/C#1 keyswitch doesn't work nor does any note sound and no key on the instrument's virtual keyboard moves. If I play the virtual keyboard, the notes sound.

    Thanks.

    Hello Leigh!

The VST Expression Maps have been made for the use in Cubase and have not been tested with Dorico. So the usage in Dorico can only be experimental. Please note that Expression Maps will never trigger samples, but take care of articulation changes (keyswitches and MIDI CC commands).

The VST Expression Map for the Jazz Drums works with all VIFrames for VI5 that are included in the “JazzDrumsProjects_v2” file. This file can be downloaded under Tutorials/Templates in the MyVSL area of the Vienna Symphonic Library webpage.

Most likely you will get better results with the Jazz Drums when you use DAW software, than with notation software.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Leigh!

Did you make any progress with Dorico + VSL Jazz Drums + Expression Maps? I have the same requirement and I'm struggling to get it all together.

I suppose starting from Dorico > New player > Drum Set (Basic), then creating a new expression map and a new VI Pro Matrix might be a reasonable way to go but I'd be keen to hear anyone else's strategy for such an undertaking.

    Cheers,

    Robin

  • ... making some progress with the GM kits but ran into a wall when trying to trigger rolls.

I'd very much like to get the full kit with brushes and sticks working with an expression map or percussion map. I'd be super-grateful for any tips!

  • There is an old thread on this issue that might still be useful.  I haven't used these in a long time, so I don't know if it still applies.
